well then set the hook as soon as you feel the tap, or if it feels ANY DIFFERENT set the hook. i'll tell ya how to set the hook. when you feel the tap or whatever, reel up slack, lower your rod tip, then pull straight up or alittle horizontal, towards your shoulder. then lower your rod tip back to the 12:00 possition and began adjusting to the fish.

Are you sure they are bass? If you are feeling hits but there is nothing there when you set the hook it you probably have bluegill grabbing the tail and swimming off with it.

I think most bass engulf the lure, so I follow the advice to set the hook as soon as I think I have a hit. That means when I see the line moving or feel something that I think is a bass, I hit 'em.

Bad things can happen when you wait, like the bass taking it deep or spitting it out.

I've seen days where they don't do much more than a small inhale, instead of an aggressive bite.
I am sure many have seen the worm come
back with half of it gone, and wondered if the bass was just nipping at the tail or was it a panfish or what?
I remember in the 70's Creme worms were the rage and several were sold with small hooks in them.."Tournament Worms" was another brand,
and several times you would hear about this guy winning a tournie where the bass were hooked on the back hook only, instead of all three.
A lot of those old worms back then would be one color with another colored dot on the head or side
Like a grape with a bright orange dot 8)
or more often than not, a solid color with a white or pink tail , or red...

Well I must say that there are times, especially fishing plastics, when you can set the hook to soon. Also with topwater Frogs and the like. I always try to feel the fish before setting the hook on plastics. Now most every thing else I hammer them as soon as I think I have a bite, like pitching and flipping , spinnerbaits, crankbaits(though not to much of a hookset on those). Those are more reaction type strikes that the fish grab quickly, but not always the case when finesse fishing IMO.
