The drag is designed to keep the line from breaking if you hang a big fish. You don't want to set it too tight, or it your line could break when reeling something in, and you don't want it too loose because then you can't reel it in.

The tightness of your drag is how much line a fish can pull off your reel. If your fishing with light line set it loose. If your fishing in brush and you don't want a fish to wrap you around something set it tight.

takes alot of trial and error to figure out that special setting. some dont believe in it, they just turn the anti reverse off.

In addition to the above, the drag is also designed to help tire out the fish as a result of it taking out line against the resistance of the drag.

My personal preference is to keep my drags at a light setting.

why would you tire out the fish? thats a bad idea, best thing to do is reel them in as quickly as possible, then release them as quickly as possible. it releives them from the stress they will get if you tire them out. plus, loose drag means sh!tty hook sets.

not true up here in pike waters. theres no pike that u wont to not have take drag. and the reason u somtimes have to fight a fish for longer then need because of line test. like if i was pike fishing 40in and i got one on a ten pound test i would want it to run because it would snap the line the second it got tight if the drag wouldnt have been there.

i understand that, but there is no need to do it on every fish, its not good for the fish.
