Default Down Imaging question

I thought I'd settled on the humminbird 581 HD DI, but I recently started looking at the Lowrance Elite 5 DSI GPS model as well.

I found a thread on here that says you can't shoot through the hull to achieve DI, with the Lowrance unit.

I'm assuming the same is true for all DI?

I'd like to shoot through the bottom of a jon boat

I put in a similar post a year or so ago. I was told that the shoot thru hull capability will not work on an aluminum boat.

Some transducers will work with aluminum, depending on the thickness.

But the manufacturer is the final word on a particular transducer.

I have to ask why you want to use a "shoot through hull" installation? There are trade-offs, depending on how you do the transducer installation, and the only advantage in a shoot through -IMO- is on a high speed boat where turbulence and water resistance may result in ripping the transducer off when at speed. You definitely loose sensitivity on the SONAR signal and the water temperature (surface, so it's not hyper critical) readings.

With SI and (I believe) DI the transducer really needs to be in the water to get results. Especially, the SI needs "unobstructed" signal paths, I can see that is true from my kayak as I had to move the transducer aft - away from the Mirage Drive (flippers) as that was all I could see on the SI "right side" view initially. But back to your question...

You have a couple mounting options, one the stern or if you don't want to screw the mounting bracket to the stern you could hang it over the side - I do on my kayak. With a JB you won't be concerned with high speed and you'll get better readings with the T/d in the water. By hanging it over the side you can also position it so that you are just about sitting on top of what you see on the unit. It's also handy if you need to clear grass from it or put inside the boat when loading to avoid damage.

Several companies make transducer brackets - Mad Frog, RAM or go the home made route - I did, well semi-home made.

I have a different installation for all the transducers on my bass boat - three - and the one on my kayak (898cSI HD) is in the water, really the only option for the SI units. Back to the boat - I have an 1197cSI at the helm with the transducer in a Transducer Saver Bracket mounted on the jackplate. I have an X-135 at the bow (hoping to replace it with an 898cDI HD soon) with the transducer on the trolling motor and a 510C in the helm dash with the transducer shooting through the hull. I have the Lowrance in the helm just so I can see bottom at WOT, the Humminbird SI units just won't hold bottom (for me anyway) above 55 MPH. I think there is just too much turbulence in the water at the jackplate mount for the 'bird to read depth while running at higher speeds.

I mentioned temperature readings and I have a couple degree difference between the inside transducer and those actually in the water, not that it's a huge deal as it's surface temperature anyway. It's certainly your choice in how you mount the transducer, but I would want to get the most out of it that I could and that would require mounting it in the water and I would probably choose to hang it over the side in your particular instance. That would also give you the option to take the whole package and use it on your kayak too - should you want to do that.

Good info, guys.
Boogie, the main reasons I'd prefer to shoot through are, out of sight out of mind, since I'd be installing it under the floor.
The second reason, is so I don't bang it up on stumps

Sounds like I won't have much choice though ;(

My yak transducer is inside the hull, btw

On a side note, does anyone have experience with either of these models?

After talking about it the past couple of weeks, my fishing partner purchased the Hummingbird 581i HD DI Combo yesterday.....He also grabbed an extra transducer for the trolling motor and a switch that will allow us to use 2 transducers with the single unit. I'm looking forward to getting it mounted and getting on the water so we can play with it and get a feel for it.....I'll be sure to give a full report once we've had some time to mess with it.
