Default How to tell the sex of a bass?

I may be stupid , but is there an easy way to tell the sex of a bass? I'm kind of new to fishing, and no one has ever explained this to me. Thanks in advance.

Yep, You kiss them on the lips. If it don't feel right, most likely it was a male bass you just done kissed. Heck I don't know except the females are usually the bigger of the two when they're spawning, but other than that I anit sure, never was curious about it until now. P N J

If my wife caught me kissing a bass, she would never let me go fishing again! Oh well, I guess I will never know now.

Like PnJ said, I don't think most fishermen can tell, the exceptions being A.) Any bass over 4 pounds is likely female and B.) If you cut it open and find eggs, its also a female (obviously).

If the bass has a small head it's a female. If the head appears normal to the size of it's body then its a male. Males can grow as large as females to a certain extent.

the only REAL way to tell(minus the obvious cutting open and doing medical things) is to put a small tube in the vent and look for eggs or milt.

If you ask it a question and it starts talkin back to you, it's a female.

Thanks! I don't feel so bad now that I don't know how to tell the difference. I guess I'm not so stupid after all.

oma,
As a general rule the vent or scaleless urogenital opening in a male largemouth bass tends to be more circular in appearance while the opening in a female largemouth tends to be more elliptical. Having said this, however, I should hasten to note that few biologists or fisheries managers rely on this method of determining the sex of a fish, because even to the well trained eye it results too often in mis-identification.

Instead, at least during the spawning season, a much more reliable method of determining the sex of mature fish is to gently push on the fish's belly, back toward the tail. When you do this properly, you will often see a white milky substance (milt) flow from a male bass while a few eggs will be evident from a female fish.

Beyond this very seasonal method, however, it is extremely difficult to distinguish between male and female largemouth bass. The only possible exception is when you catch a particularly large fish. As a general rule, largemouth bass bigger than eight or nine pounds are nearly always females.

Always heard the same, any bass over 7-8 pounds is a female.

Male bass maximum weight anywhere: 6 pounds

Anything other than biopsy is a guess - there is no definitive way to tell unless you have a release of egg or milt. The vent is identical at the external view.

The reasion I asked was, last year when I was fishing, a guy that was near me implied most of the fish I was catching were female. Me being new to this sport, I didn't think to ask him how he could tell. I thought it may be obvious and I didn't want to seem like I was stupid.

The best way to tell a male from a female is you have to buy them a few drinks and ask nicely to see up their skirt.....

I heard my info from a taxidermist. He should know his stuff, after all he's been mounting fish for years.
Male bass can grow and sometimes do grow to an excess of 5 lbs.
This is not an opinionated statement.

Since its not your opinion or information you should go back to the taxidermist and tell him that he needs to garner better information as the size of the head has nothing to do with the sex of a bass.

He couldn't be more wrong.

mother nature is strange as most of us are human. we have finger prints and foot prints that are unquie to every person. the mammals all have "visable gender" making us male or female.most fish, and canadian honkers are unquie in they require a close biopsy to determand gender.. fish scales and geese feathers have no gender traits.. how do i know this well for one watch tlc once in a while and two i am a member of the migatory bird survey in washington dc. according to department of the intreior scientist.-the best in the contry-"there is NO way possable way to judge a gooses gender short of bioptsy"...

Oh boy here we go LMAO. But in all honesty when it comes to a basses sex all we can do is assume what they are. According to fisheries biologists the male seldom grows larger than 4 or 5 lbs. During spawning it is easier to tell the difference. As far as the head being larger come on now thats a bit far fetched. And the feather thing thats as good as it gets. I can see it now" Charlie dont you shoot that bird. I dun looked at its fedders and its a female" LMAO!!!!!!
