Default Post-spawn lunkers

Hi,

it looks like there's a late spawn at my lake, but I'm sure that the larger bass have finished spawning, as that they are always the first (from what I've read).

So now, I want to get serious, because catching the same 14oz-1lb bass makes me feel like I'm missing out on the monsters that I could take a shot at if I put my bait to where they are. Where do these post-spawn bass go? I was thinking maybe the dam of the lake, towards which the wind blows most of the time...
How have you guys been catching them?

I think post spawn feed on the flats, at least thats what they are doing here, I've been targeting windblown banks with spinnerbaits

Post spawn is a FANTASTIC time to catch good numbers of good bass. Basically all you have to do is back off of the spawning structure to the first available cover in deeper water. Use your electronics and TRUST them. When you find baitfish the bass will be there.

Yup, JB, when I think post spawn, flats are what I see. I know of a spot on a creek I fish that has a eel grass flat that gets shallower and sandier until it becomes a 3 foot deep sand flat that borders some stumps. Now thats hot come post spawn.

going in blind i would start in the backs of creeks using shallow cranks and work toward the mouth of the creek. changing cranks that dive continuing deeper as i go.. probly finishing with a poes 400 at the mouth od the creek in 10-12 feet of water..

bassnman
used this mouth of creek technique to win a recent tourny. after he pumbled it with a crank. i went in and carolina rigged it-knowing he cranked it to death- catching a good fish in the same tourny..

Hey Zook, what tournament are you referring to ? I've only won once this season, and that was our last one at Tuckertown on grass covered flat.
At Tillery I wasn't fishing a creek, but a big flat as well.
Was it sometime last year ?????

Default Reaserch shows

Big female bass are the first to leave the beds leaving the male to guard the nest for ten days. After that the male pushes the fry into some structure like weeds and goes deep to rest up. About six days later the female returns to bedding area to hunt down her young and eat them. Hence flats produce big bass after spawn. Use bass colored lures that are large like poppers on overcast day and Baby Minus 1 on sunny days. Even bomber A will work on these hungery females. Just little insight on how they work. Not how they think since they are just creatures of habit.

So it's not a flat if it's got grass? Cabin Creek?

A flat is just exactly what the name implies. A span of water that basically has no change in depth although it can have cover which in turn makes it more appealing to the bass.

That's what I thought. Guess a more proper name would be Grass Bed.

not really, a flat could have a completely sandy bottom, doesn't necessarily have to have grass or any weeds for that matter.

Your spawning flats won't have alot of big fish on them as Laser mentioned, they will be in off the flat in deeper water most of the time suspended nearby the contour change.I hate post spawn here in NY. The deep glacier made lakes are difficult to catch fish during post spawn weeks until the summer pattern picks up, because they just go out and suspend in 20- 80 ft. of water alot due to the rapid lake bottom contour change .I'll take pre spawn which is the current stage here over post spawn anyday. thats a big dif. from ohio lakes, where many are 7-12 feet deep only in 80% of the waters...the resouviors in indiana are great for deeper water 90 ft +......so around here the post spawn could be flats that run a mile long and are 1/2 mile wide...ya just have to check out the drops and look around, many are more successful in a smaller perimeter of area, a flat that is 20-30 ft off the bank, then a dropoff...thats more the senerio I am used to day in an out

Several areas in Lake Sonoma have flats just as JB is refering to not quite as large. In some cases 30 yards wide and 150 yards long.

JB, I can choose the seasonal pattern to fish here for the most part. There are the deep lakes and then the smaller lakes which will be patterned about 2 weeks ahead of the big lakes. The small lakes are about 30-60 ft depths max with alot of shallow water, while the big lakes are well over 100 ft. deep with rapid contour changes and small flat areas to fish that break off quick.Seneca lake is 610 feet deep in the deepest part, but there are alot of good fishing around the shoreline edges. Zook,
No not there. Had no "competitors" there all day. Fished this particular area for the most part of the day. This area is too grassy for C-rigs. It's got alot of that "Tuckertown grass" mixed in with the regular grass as well.
If you get a C-Rig bite here, then it must be before the bait touches the bottum on the first cast. Otherwise your in the thick of things.
Our fish quit after 9:00 A.M. I had 6 strikes but only put three in the boat.
12.25 lbs.
