Help Identify these 2 lures
I decided I wanted to start collecting afew lures here and there and picked up these two on a garage sale the other day. I have a book with a bunch of pictures but I can't seem to find any matchers. If any of you happen to delve into this aspect of fishing I'd love to hear what you think about them regardless of trash or treasure. Here are a couple of pics.
and top view, and the 2nd one and the 2nd view thanks for any help!

yep looks late 50's early 60's
the other looks like a poes 200-don't quote me- it is rare to find an old lure that small. need a picture of the eye attachment to be sure back in the day there was not free spools on the reels. handles spun when cast -you can imagine the lack of distance-they were casting heavy braided dacron line. most lures weighed 3/4 oz or better and were big.. zooker

Jabe,
Smithwick (still) makes the Devil's Horse. I've never seen one in that chubby shape. Our friend might glean some useful info at: http://www.mrlurebox.com/webuy.htm FR Last edited by FlyRod; 06-18-07 at 09:22 AM. |

what the hell??...thats not stock line tie eyes.. the original would be a s hook type hook up that fits into the collar on the diving lip. not the screw eye.almost all of the older lures would have this hook up rigging.the small s hook looks original.
a screw eye in that position would effect the action of the bait..as the line would be against the front of the bait on retrive..they knew this when they made these lures hence the reason for the s-hook up on the steel lip.. do me a favor.. carefully remove the lip 2 screws the hook will come off with it.. look into the screw holes to see if there is another color where they meet the bare wood.. look at the lip most tackle builders would definatly have there stamp in it see if there is letters and numbers anywhere on the lip... then let me know.. it actually looks like a big jake with a steel lip.. zooker

its an interesting situation because I took off the lip, there is absolutely no writing on it. On the top of the lip right at the base is some white paint. The interesting thing is that the two lures have identical silver diamonds, there aeyes and gills are the same as well. If you look at the double spinner the paint is chipped and reveals alittle white similar possibly to the white on the lip. Even then though its all just speculation. The collecting lures business is tougher than I thought haha.

some one repainted them. which basicly ruins the value of the bait..the devil horse looks "correct" as the shape and design have little changed in years..
i would have printed this out and showed it to my old lure source but sadly he passed away recently... zooker

I think the prop bait is an original Skip Jack that was made in the early 1960. I believe the red stripes have been added. Solid Yelow or yellow coach dog was very popular in that lure. The other bait puts me in mind of a Heddon River series. Not a runt or pikey but the diving bill looks like those. I am fairly sure about the Skip Jack. I had one in the early 1960 and the bass loved it.Its popularity wained after Rapala introduced the original Rapala floater in 1964. Fish2win
