What am I doin Wrong!!???!!
I was fishing a rat L' trap yesterday and hooked a 10 pound bass, i was so scared i was going to lose him, as he got closer to me he came off and i was so ticked, i threw my pole witch wasnt a good idea the way i threw it, the trebble hooks hooked me in the hand, but later i was missing some big bass, i would reel them in so far and then they would just come off, what am i doing wrong??

well i had the same thing with the hook through the hand for me one day but i ended up going to the hospital. it hurts. but i would say maybe your not setting the hook right, somthing is up with the hooks. so i dont no what to really tell u. but everyone loses the big one every once in awhile. better luck next time.

Maybe you aren't reeling in your slack before you set it? Occasionally I do that.

Rat-L-Traps are notorious for the poor hooks they come with. If you didn't sharpen or replace them, that could be part of the problem. If you didn't keep your line tight during the fight, that could be part of the problem.
But you can do everything right and still lose fish. To paraphrase that well-known bumper sticker, "Stuff Happens."

One tends to forget how easy it is to pull any set of treble hooks out of a fish's mouth, its my guess he didn't
play the fish long enough, tried to horse him in "in a panic" and the trebs pulled loose...Ya have to learn not to jerk like a worm hook set when using ratLtraps, rather a sweeping motion, then play it out till the fish tires |

Change the hooks on all traps, I use triple grips. Crank baits for the most part need a flexable rod (unless your runnings traps over grass, then i like a stiffer rod to keep the fish up, but thats me) and lossen the drag a bit, the tighter the line the easier the fish can throw the hooks. You want the fish to toss his head a bit to enable more hooks to dig in. Traps are about a 60% hook-up bait, just keep chunkin.

yeah alot of good info here...
1. if you're not using mono softne your drag. 2. you need to be using a med and at most a MH rod and possibly a ML 3. NO BIG HOMERUN HOOK SET. 45-60 degree angle up 4. keep constant pressure on the fish. not yanking pressure but enough to move the fish 5. I like VMC hooks and change all my cranks(all styles) to them. |

Hey Zach BassFisherman,
A 10 lb bass is a big fish. Are sure it was 10 lbs ? Maybe it "looked" to be a 10 lber. I'm not saying that it wasn't a 10 lber, but I think you know what I mean.

these guys all said what i would have said just a little sweep dont set the hook hard. i use a medium light rod for most cranking. i hate going that light but its nice for small cranks and setting the hook.

People are going to think I crazy for this but I have proved it too many times!! 1st remove the hooks on a Trap, their junk!! 2nd this is where I will get doubter, read "Caught me a big'un and let it go" by Jimmy Houston, where he talks about throwing a Spot, (similar to a Trap) on the heaviest rod you can get, hook a fish and you'll see why. I use an extra stiff rod to throw a trap!! I know I know what you guys are going to say, but I promise I will lose less fish on it then you will on a limp rod. Here's why, 80% of the time you loose a fish on a trap is because they get their head out of the water!!! With the stiff rod, after I hook the fish my first move is stright to the water and stick the rod as far down as I can, with the stiff rod she can't get up and get her head out of the water!!! I win the battle!! I land about 95% or better of all fish I hook on a trap, and I don't put one down from Feb-May!!! I have proven this time and time again with guys in the back of the boat using a med light rod and they still lose fish, and I don't!! Now it's harder to cast granted, but the pay off is worth it. I do use a med action rod for regular cranks, but not a trap!!
