Default SAE 90 vs SAE 80-90W

Hey guys

I run a 60 4stroke Mercury on my boat. Last year when I purchased the lower unit oil I bought the SAE 90 (my owners' manual is mute to which to buy SAE 90 vs SAE 80W-90). At any rate, I was browsing at Bass Pro last night and noticed that, according to the Quicksilver labels, the SAE 90 is for 75+ hp while the SAE 80W-90 is for below 75hp. Do you think it will hurt to continue to use the SAE 90 on my 60hp? I didn't notice any issues last year. Also, what is the difference? I heard the 90 was a better grade; if so, I might just keep running it.

Thanks for your help guys.

I'm no expert but I think you'd be just fine, if not better off, with the multi-weight oil. Viscosity is a measurement of how oil flows and with a multi-weight, the upper number is the measurement in a warm engine, the lower in a cold engine. A multi-weight gives better oil flow when the engine is cold than a single weight, while giving nothing away when the engine is warm. Check with your dealer or mechanic to be sure to make no changes that may void a warranty.

I've been using 90w in a 30hp Evinrude for a couple decades!... also use it in some spinning reel bearings.
