Default Trolling motor safety question.

This is a picture of my boat. As you can see, it's just a small jon with a transom mounted electric motor. I almost always fish just my local lakes within minutes of my house so I trailer the boat with the motor still mounted to the transom as shown. Thursday coming up, I am trailering the boat to a lake I've never been on which is about an hour or more from home. Do you think the motor would be ok to travel that far left mounted to the transom or would you recommend taking the motor off the boat until we get to the destination? I'm not sure how safe it would be on the motors height adjustment and tension collars with the vibration and bouncing around a road trip will produce.

Does your motor have a bracket that allows it to be perpendicular to the boat.
Similar to a bow mount?
Mine would and I did this.
If so, I'd put it in that position and pull blades as close to transom as possible.
I had a setup similar for electric motor only waters. Never took motor off BUT, the height adjuster collars tend to loosen on long or rough travel...allowing it to maybe slip and slide down to the road.
Also I always checked the tension collar bolts before I left home, when I put in and before the trip home. Those back two twist nobs on the transom seem to loosen very easy by vibration.

Hey have a great trip and time on the new water.
I like fishing new waters and I think your going to have a blast.

You would probably be fine for short hauls, but after all the crap that has happened to me over the years - I'd take it off and stow it inside the boat and not trust it remaining in a safe position attached on the transom during transport.

I take mine off and put it in the back of the truck on floor of the boat. Handy tip, take some closed cell foam and wrap the control head with it. Secure with small bungee cords or wire ties. This will help keep the control board inside the head from getting banged up and dropping "gears".

Ok, all good info. Going to put it in the back of the CRV where I won't have any worries. Thank you mates.

Well, the GF does have some priority. And I guess you can throw in the work schedule too. After using it for a whole season, I can tell you I love it. My battery life is MUCH longer than it was with my old Motor Guide. Both are rated 55#. The only two things I would change would be to have an aluminum hand control arm as my Motor Guide did instead of plastic, and aluminum height and tension control collars instead of plastic, which my Motor Guide did have and still does. Otherwise, it performed exactly as was advertised to do.

Keith, I'd play it safe. If you can take it off I'd store it where it can be protected.

I always store mine inside the boat. Unless I am up at my cabin. The lake is only 3 blocks away up there so I feel safe at that distance. If something bad can happen to me it usually does. Like Reb says "Play it safe."
