Anyone remember this?

Heres one for the old timers here, anyone ever remember stacking quarters and taping them to the butt end of a flipping stick? It used to be all the rage around here for guys that wanted a balanced rod.

I think one of my buds used a cane rubber tip, and would put 5-6 quarters in it, then fit it over the butt end of the rod...I always thought it would make it heavy, but tried it and it felt balanced...all the guys back then fished those bigger ABU garcia reels...

I've balanced all of my rods. What finally convinced me was a local guy who's known for his jigs, and jig fishing, showed a group of guys last winter how you can detect light bites when jig fishing that you might not detect if your rod is not balanced.

onstead of tape, you can use one of those rubber caps they use to stick on the bottom of lawn chairs... forget what size though... Just put the quarters on, stick the cap, and leave it... epoxy it if you want it permanent

Apparently Airrus rods have a small opening in the butt you can put weights into , or anything for weight...just drop it in and put the cap back on.

Putting weights in the butt section is a tried and true method, alright.
When sharing this idea with others, however, one must make certain that one is VERY detailed and concise.
Some years ago a fellow I scarcely knew called me and sought my cousel re detecting subtle bites. I was in a bit of a rush and simply said "Lead weights in the butt." then wished him well and hung up.
Two days later I got a call from a certain medical specialist who wanted to know what the H--- I'd told the guy. The good proctologist said it took them three hours to extract the weights from his...

That maybe true on some models, but my Ultra LS has no opening like that. The rod does come with 2 interchangeable handle butts. I'm not a big fan of this option, but I understand the reason why Ken offers them. I just use the longer one.

IMO stacking quarters works better than some balancing kits do.

I buy BPS Xtreme rods which connect to the BPS balancing kit. I love the feel of the light tip. I have become so comfortable with the BPS balancing that my other rods are starting to gather dust.
