Dave is an awesome fisherman. I've hired him twice, and had a great time on both occasions.

That fish will continue to be argued about for a while, I'd bet.

I remember when I was young my dad talking about the blue pike in Lake Erie. Would love to see one up close.

They're both crunchy and golden after a dip in Lake Crisco.

this was the talk of the watercooler today at work... pretty neat to see an extinct subspecies considering Dale hollow doesn't allow for natural breeding.

On a related note... anyone see the new world record white crappie?

Is it a subspecies, or a genetic variant?

Did a little research on Wikipedia... always known for reliable info...

Both the yellow walleye and the blue walleye are listed under the binomial nomenclature, Sander Vitreus. The subspecies listing or trinomial nomenclature is sander vitreus vitreus for the yellow walleye, the one we commonly see, and sander vitreus glaucus for the blue walleye.

This means that the 2 are different enough to be listed as subspecies of each other, but not enough to classify as a whole new species.

Blue walleye typically have bigger eyes, and do not have the white spot on the anal or tail fin. There have been allot of these type of fish caught in recent years, but when tested they end up being a yellow walleye. Looking at the picture, I bet this will be the same case.

The 'true' blue walleye is gone.

What you have is that there were invariably a few hybrids, or even the original genes floating around from when the blue walleye became a distinct genetic strain.

Those genes would still be present even in some populations of golden walleye, and once in a while result in a golden walleye with silver color.

That is my theory at least.

That's cool. I LOVE fishing Dale Hollow. Haven't done it for about 46 years but when I was growing up and every year for years, my family and 2 other families used to pile everything we needed for a weekend in our boats and head out across the lake in search of the perfect camping spot. We'd set up then fish, swim, gig frogs and just have a ball. I even caught a 3 1/2 lb smallmouth when I was about 8. My Dad was gonna have it mounted for me but somebody came along throughout the night and stole it out of the basket hanging off the back of one of the boats. That is just one beautiful lake. If you've never been there and you have a chance of going there to fish, don't hesitate, TAKE IT!!!
