Default Question about dams.....

Ok I fish in my home town of Peterborough and in my town we have almost 20 dam's in total. now they aren't big *** power dams like Hoover, average is 15 feet high.

Sometimes they are closed sometimes they are open, usually water is clear mainly with a rocky bottom.

Question is where is the prime place to fish when (a) the dams are open. (b) when the dams are closed.?

Can the water be too fast comming out of the dam's.?

Robby.

When they are running fish on the edge of the current. The high percentage spots will be where slack or slow moving water comes right up next to the heavy current. If there are big rocks or anything else that can create eddies, fish those.

It is possible to have too much current.

are these power generating dams? if so the best time would be when they are spinning the turbines. the bestr time other wise would be when they released water you don't say how much water they released but i would fish slack areas off the main currant area as this would be were bait that gets suck through will stack up..

To add to what has already been posted, if you are fishing in/near the current cast upstream and retrieve downstream with the current. If you do it the other way around the bait will not look natural, moving upstream against the current.

To add to what the wise and honorable master Po said, and brudda Zook, and WTL......match what is there as far as bait fish, at my dam it's usually shad and you should be able to see them with no problem......I use crank baits , shad colored and i generally hammer their ***, besides slack water next to current and cranking down current, try cranking cross current, i've gotten some good fish like that.

Stevo

P.s. Get as close as you can to the dam and find any retaining walls, riprap , whatever, that makes a bend and hit the slack water on the backside.

You may want to try fishing at Hastings as well....not far from you and they have a nice little park along the river...I see folks fish there quite a bit......if you can get fishing tips from them there, perhaps the same tips will work in Peterborough.

Fished Rice Lake second week of July and visited the area and Peterborough in the early afternoons. Nice area. Good fishing, Mac
