Getting and keeping hold of a pickerel is difficult due to their snake like bodies. Grabbing behind the gill plates for any length of time, may damage blood vessels and lead to delayed mortality. Letting them thrash around in a net and on deck, is tough on the slime coat.

I use a wire jaw spreader for deeper hooks since pics clamp down pretty tight, especially large pics.

I wish I knew of a gentler way to hold the fish long enough to get the hook(s) out and release unharmed, but the way it thrashes doesn't seem to give one too many options. I guess the same goes for muskie and northerns.

There is a way to land a pickerel and pike in a nice manner and is totaly easy on the fish. It's called a fish cradle check this site out and there's even one one how to make them.

Hope this might help I use one and I'll never turn back to netting again!

Tony is correct... Just the other day while bass fishing in PA, I caught a slew of big pickeral on the Yamamoto 7x Kutails... Usually they leave them alone but the bass must have been sleepin /\ If I were to select one bait that murders the pickeral, I would choose any flashy type inline spinner like a mepps. They'll take any perch finish lure that pulls 5" or so under the water too...

My easiest method of landing with pickeral and catfish is, have a towel in your hand and grab them. Its better than anything...

Great fishin'

Mike
Good lures for pickerel include in-line spinners, spinner baits, any plastic with action, like a grub, swimming worm, etc, a buzz bait, even top waters, like a pop-r. Hot colors tend to work much better with pickerel. You want to catch chain pickerel, they are much larger than their redfin cousins. Â*Use at least 6 lb test and you shouln't have to worry about them cutting you off. Have fun!
That towel is going to rob them off slime even worse than your hand. Even a wet towel.

If you guys are REALLY fussy, just lip them with your pliers.

Archer - good idea and have a second pair to pull the hook(s) out. They even have those nifty clamps the are used to clamp two pieces of glued wood together. Â*They ratchet down and have a quick release bar toward the rear. The plungers are plastic and round and one would fit easily into the mouth and the other under the jaw.

Bass Pro Shops used to sell a gizmo that was basically a pair of plastic pliars made for liping toothy fish. I've got a pair that I call "grinnel grippers". They're shaped sort of like a pistol, and really do a great job. I don't know if they still sell them or not. I didn't see them on their web-site but they might be in the big master catalog. I've used them to land crankbait hooked bass, as well as grinnels, and catfish, and have used them to hold a pickerel once I get them in the boat.

The only thing I didn't like about them was when I got them they had a big metal nail, sort of like a roofing nail in the jaws, that I suppose was to get a better grip on a fish. I seperated the jaws, took that out, and glued the jaws back together.

a large saltwater spoon...

dunno y everybody wants heavy line for pickerel, went on a campin trip in northern jersey to fariview lakes fir our 7 th grade field trip, was there 3 days(the lake was huge had bass and perch and pikrel galore.) I had my 4 ft 6 ultra light spooled with 4lb test line and landed 8 pickrele without breaking off. one was close to 3 lbs also and had some hellish teeth. So my question is why in the hell would you want heavy line if you could try playing the fish for once?

ps-i do like heavy line for bass though ;D dunno why,.

Playing the fish out for me usually means the fish coming off.

I get them in the boat, then play with them.

to hold pickerel or pike I just held them by the gill(with the gills shut) I didn't get cut up or anything and holding it like that paralyzes the fish so they don't flop around and the hook is easy to get out. Whenver I get a bass that just won't stop flopping I hold the gills shut and he doesn't move.
