Default Warning.  Old man rambling.

I've been reading the post about the kids ruining the a lake again and I got to thinking. How'd I get from being a dumb kid to where I am today? (Ok. I'm an old, fat, semi-bald kid, but that's beside the point.)

My dad didn't fish or hunt. I didn't have any brothers. What I did have was a creek full of fish, and a lot of time to kill. My grandfather and my uncle both fished and hunted though, and although they didn't "take" me fishing a lot, (after all they had to work 6-7 days a week.) what they did do, was open my eyes to how things are supposed to be done by subscribing to the greatest source of information a dumb kid growing up in the 50-60's ever saw.

Outdoor magazines. In those days there were only three really. Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, and Sports Afield. Man those things were GREAT.

I might never see a Muskie, but I knew about fishing for them. Grayling in Alaska? Man, I could help you out. Deer hunting in Texas? Elephants in Africa. Bass in Florida. Man I crisscrossed the world in the pages of those magazines. I read those things until they fell apart. I'd literally hide under the covers with a flashlight at night.

But more importantly I learned the "RIGHT" way to "do it". A week or so ago, I got on my soapbox about someone tresspassing to catch a fish. Yep. I feel pretty strongly about such things because a long time ago guys like Homer Circle (yes, he's been around that long) and Al McClain, and Byron Dalrymple taught me that you just DON'T do that.

You didn't snag fish, shoot birds on the ground, hunt our of season, take more than your limit, and so on. If you broke any of those unwritten rules, you were something that real sportsmen wouldn't have anything to do with. (Rather the "rule" was actually written or unwritten, didn't matter. They all had the force of LAW to those fellows.)

So. What's the point of all this rambling?

Well, just this. I suspect that most of us get a stack of hunting, fishing, and boating type magazines every month. We read 'em, toss in a stack until our mothers, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, someone yells at us to get rid of them. We haul them out to the trash, or hide them in the garage in "case we need to look up something". Which of course we never do.

How about next time, passing them on to a kid who might be interested? This does three things. It promotes an interest in the outdoors, it promotes an interest in reading. And just as importantly it get the stuff out of YOUR house and into someone elses for them to throw away, making the person who's been nagging you to get rid of them happy.

Give a magazine to a kid. Who knows. You might start something.

I can relate to you in a few ways, Cajun.

1. My dad doesn't hunt, and rarely fishes. Sometimes I can convince him to come.

2. My brother fished the same pond as me when he lived here, but he is much older than me and now lives in Virginia with a family of his own.

3. The pond out back. Lots of time to waste.

I don't read magazines much at all, but I did learn most of the stuff I know about fishing from either trial and error or internet research. This forum has been one of the top sources.

you know i have been reading this also . i was raised a the lake and taught not to ruin it so we all could enjoy it . i think the boy scouts assoc. needs to push a little more to get kids interested in the beauty of outdoor activites these days as they did in my day

Ok would this apply to porno mags cause I have a ton my dad handed me down.

I've been from the red light district of Germany to the streets of Vagas. I learnd from J.C Holmes how to do things right . and things like it's ok to tip a hooker but only after your first time with her.

I would stay under my sheets at night. not only reading , but boy did I learn'd alot.

I guess I'm in the same boat hand the books down they will enjoy them alot!.

I either subscribe to or pick up at the store several fishing type magazines. My dentist office carries over 20 diff types of magazines and they have them in stacks of several months of each one. When we go there my youngest daughter (11 yoa) will go thru them and pick out Field and Stream and Alaska (the only 2 outdoor type mags they have). I am so proud of her, most other kids her age would be more interested in the movie star magazines. Shes not old enough yet to hunt, but she sure is excited about when she gets her first Buck!

Cajun,

OUTSTANDING post, and very relevant to this forum lately. I would just ask if there is a place that you could donate the magazines to, or is it just pick a kid and give it to them? I receive Bassmaster, Field and Stream, Go Boating(probably not a kids magazine but who knows), and several others that just seem to show up, and keep them just like everyone else, and I'll probably never go back through them again :-[ Anyway I was lucky enough to have a father, uncles, and a brother to hunt and fish with. I was taught the RIGHT way to do it, and wish that more young folks could share in those beliefs and practices. Again thanks for the post it was excellent.

Led Zeppelin put it best..Ramble On....
I wasn't fortunate enough to have a father or any other relatives that were real outdoors types(but Pop does grow a mean garden!!)..But I was lucky enough to have friends and other adults to show me the RIGHT way to do things. And I credit Bassmaster magazine for a lot of my bass fishing knowledge. My best friends dad showed me the ins and outs of hunting and offshore fishing and for that I am thankful..I'd also like to thank everyone here for contributing to this addiction we call bass fishing..And now I'm lucky enough to have a son to pass it on to (and he wants to know everything!)

good idea if you can find kids that want them if not send them to our troops in afgan and iraq they are hot stresses tired and lonely. let em know someone gives a damn, let get out of the desert and to a lake or forest for a few minutes in there minds. did i mention there very board ? not alot to do over there unless you wanna get shot or worse..... over there the opinion is people are forgetting them because its no longer so hip for celebs to visit them the care packages are drying up and the reporters only talk about the few bad things going on instead of all the heroes on the ground giving there blood sweat and tears for there country.

snag,
Good idea, the last edition of Bassmaster had a great article about American soldiers fishin while not on duty. And rightfully they should, they have earned it

Cajun,
Great post, I can proudly admit that as a kid I adopted my fair share of outdoor magazines ;D.

Well, I was thinking in terms of just giving them to a kid you know. All mine go to a friends grandson now. He treats them like they're made of gold or something. His sister reads them too.

As for giving them to kids if you don't have access to kids that belong to someone else (The best kind, now that I've served my time raising them.) is to contact the local Boy Scouts, 4H clubs, Future Farmers of America if they still have them around, and so on.

Another good thing to do with them is take them to your local VA hospital. (Books you've read too.) The Vets there will read them until they fall apart.

so many uses for silly little magazines most people throw away or stash to collect dust, just think what else is gathering dust in your garage that pole you havent used in 10 years could make a kid into next generations pro bass fisherman
clothes for the less fortunate
bicycles or toys
just about anything
doesnt need to be money just unused stuff or time and effort to put it in the right place.
something to think about.

Cajun your rambling is well put. Most of the guys in my fire station bring all the old magazines there. We read them and when they get old one of our retirees picks them up and donates them to mission. (homeless shelter for families)

A month or so ago, i bought 115 old issues of Bassmasters. I think they are interesting to read and its funny to see some of the same people 10 years younger.

Default Warning. Young kid rambling.

ya know Cajun,
i'm a kid getting magazines atleast once a month. half are golf and half are fishing. I look at them alot, especially in the dull summer days when I'm not fishing. I leave them all over this house. and my mom gets a hold of them sometimes, and about twenty percent of them are missing every week the only ones i actually keep, and actually look at are those Edwin Watts Golf Catalogs, Cabelas Tackle Shop Catalogs, Bass Pro Shops Anglers Catalogs (got about 4 of the same 2004 year already-A. BPS forgets they sent one to me, and sends another one, or B. i forget i have one, and incedently order another one thinking cool, a BPS anglers 2004 catalog, although I just analyzed the whole catalog yesterday while eating a triple decker ham sandwich.)

So, what's the point of all this rambling?

To say that I try to pass fishing down to my little brother, by showing or giving him one of my fishing magazines. He never cares a bit. My family doesn't understand what's so interesting about those little
jigs with the spinning shiny blades that supposely catches these fish called "largemouth bass". And those round, shiny funny-looking "baitcasting reels", with those "graphite rods". So I try to show them the sport, but some aren't born to fish.

In Conclusion, Giving a magazine to a kid is good, but If your the brother of the kid your giving the magazine to, Good Luck

PS: I wish I knew how to ramble like Cajun :P

my pop does a little fishing not much.i have taken him a couple of times. i don't complain about his equipment. but he does complain about the "100" rods and reels i have. actual number 25. he still uses a old glass rod with a penn -god knows what number-pre level wind reel. and braided dacron line -lines older than me-explaining the fine tweaks and touches i use on my baits falls on deaf ears. he just ties one on and starts chunking...

so yeah i feel your pain

Bassintom,
Â*
Â*Actually, I am a patient. I've been there many times and have only taken one bassmaster magazine. It was perhaps one of the first ones out. People wrote in and complained about depth finders. They were stating that they wouldn't be fair. They also stated that there might possibly be digital depth finders comming out soon !
Go figure.
