Line for specific applications
I am setting up a couple of rods for specific applications and don't know what line to put on them. My first one in a softplastic rod, and the second is for crankbaits. I haven't heard anything specifically for soft plastics, but I've heard suggestions for mono and fluoro for crankbait rods.
I'd like to know mono, fluoro, or braid. Also what lb test. Thanks --bb144--

I like 14, or 16 lb fluorocarbon for soft plastics.I am not always right though. I tried fluorocarbon for crankbaits, but I have found that I was constantly retying, due to nicks, or chatter marks in the line.I guess I run those cranks through too much crap,I found that 12 lb P-Line Evolution line works extremely well for cranking line for me with the exception of rattle traps.I run 20 lb braid for rattle traps as a rule, I can feel when it fouls on weeds, so I can snap it clear before it snags up , or clogs up with weeds.

i throw 14lb seaguar invizx flourocarbon for softplastics and jigs. it is really tough line and recently the bite has been very light, since flourocarbon is extremley sensitive it makes a big difference for me. a lot of people say to use braided line as it is sensitive as well but has no memory but my lakes around here are gin clear and without a flourocarbon leader braid just makes me feel naked. for crankbaits i have tried both flourocarbon and mono. flouro will get your bait a little deeper but has some drawbacks. first like pnj said you will be retying a lot, and second i lost some fish because it has no stretch and they just ripped the hooks out. don't really have a definate opinion on crankbait line but right now i am using 12lb p-line mono and it hasn't given me a reason to strip it off yet. if you are looking for brands i would say that in flourocarbon searuar is as good as it gets, and in mono i really like maxima or p-line (used them all on anything from jigs to finesse baits and they are good all around lines).

if you are gonna be throwing a horny toad or comparable bait on your softplastic rod then braid would be the way to go. flourocarbon will sink, killing the action of your bait and mono has way too much stretch for these baits which have a lower hookup percentage to begin with. braid will float and has zero stretch. zookers post just made me think of that because he is like the king daddy of the horny toad.

I use braid for soft plastics in heavy cover. Flourocarbon in open water. For crankbaits, I use mono. For many years I used Trilene XL and had good luck with it. Recently I tried going back to Stren original which I hadn't used in 30 years. I switched to Trilene back then because I so disliked the Stren. However, it seems the Stren of today is far superior to the old Stren I used before and I was impressed with the newer variety.

keith... you may already know this but now stren and trilene are the same company. may explain the upgrade in quality, but of the two i would rather use stren, ask 2 guys and you will probably get two answers as they can't be too much difference in them but i really dislike trilene.

I have to agree with C-Rig on this one. My dad has used stren mono his whole life and so have I. Never had any problem with it. I recently go a free pack of Trilene XL and tried it. Withing two hours of fishing, it was in the trash and the Stren was back on my reel.
By the way, thanks for all the help guys. --bb144--

I prefer 10 or 12 lb. mono for plastics. 10 lb. fluorocarbon for cranks.

For plastics and jigs, use braid. Superior sensitivity, about about it being very visible, just use leader if you want, but I don't unless it's super clear water. You're worm is down on the bottom where light penetration is poor. And unless you're fishing white sandy bottom, you don't have to worry about it too much. For cranks, use use flouro, 8-12lb.
Wo! I didn't either!
