Default Building a Casting Deck

well heres my boat's ad

there in the bottom pic...

and thats what i'll be working with without the side gaps.. i'm adding another layer of plywood to that.. then fiberglassing the sides..

but anywho..

I really want a casting deck on the front of this sucker..I can fiberglass and make a gell coat.. so what do you suggest?

I've only got a 1959 Evinrude 35 to go on the back of it for now.. so i cant be pushing too much.

any suggestions?

The real work is going to be in bracing the front deck. The deck itself - well you will just cut it to fit but you have kinda a weird shape going on there. Think it through, you're a smart kid and its good to use the brain. The first several decks I made for fishing boats I just threw together and the results suffered. Think! Take your time. Measure twice so you only gotta cut once.

i'm thinking about making it flat across where the front seat is.. then run it back to the livewell or a little bit in front of it..

how much will that deck weigh?

i dont know if i should use lightweight stud material or treated 2x4's.

i plan on making two doors in it for stuff in the bottom and the side rack i'll make it to a rod rack probally

Today i added a layer of fiberglass Mat to the back corner..
I also added a good glob of filler to a couple holes in the gell coat.. one in the hull and one in the top rim.
Before i started

then progress pics

One thing to be aware of: Adding the deck will throw off the center of balance making it nose heavy. Not a real problem, just something to be aware of. A friend of mine did the same thing with an old ski boat. When running he has to be aware of the wave height because the heavy nose makes it more prone to spearing a wave.

Please add breathers to ventilate floor area. Also most boat builders require at least 10% floatation foam installed.

I suggest a 1/2 hole sawed into four corners of the flooring corners and spray in foam. Replace the holes and fiberglass over.

Breathers should be mounted above the deck line. If you do not add breathers temp changes will cause the ribs to rot.

An old solution to this was to pitch the entire ribs, hulls and underside of deck before attaching.. but it was adding a lot of weight.. foam is better.

no pics from today.. but i got the fiberglass laid.. and tomorrow i'm going to bondo over it and make it somewhat level with the sides..

the bondo work i did yesterday didnt have enough hardener in it.. so thats why it was still green.. today it was crap brown..

i got the next layer of fiberglass on.. and tomorrow i'm going to sand the back.. bondo it.. probally do a little work on the crack in it and get some floor in it

what do you mean by floor breathers?

it does have a "breather tube " in the front.. but i'll throw in a shower drain in the middle of the front or something..

the casting deck i plan to make pretty light weight.. thats why i want to use stud material..

Above the deck an inch or so, so water does not go in the vent..

how much weight do you think i would add if i put two decks in and built it like this?

i plan to build the structure with housing stud material thats lightweight..

then probally lay fiberglass over it and make it smooth

what kinda weight addition am i looking at ? also.. i'm only pushing this boat with a 35 hp so will i be alright?

today:
I got the bondo sanded good.. the holes i filled in the top of the rail didnt fill like i wanted but it'll be fine. i got the hole in the side filled and it looks AWESOME.. i gotta hand it to my buddy on his sanding job. The fiberglass for the back came out SAWEETT too. we got it sanded and the wax paper off got the runs sanded out where it melted the tape to the boat.. and got it bondoing up now..
the crack in the top rail we bondo'd over it today so it'll be smooth. I clamed a 1x4 under the edge and got it being filled now..
i may just leave the right corner kinda rounded out instead of a right angle.. then again i may...
i left the boat out last night hoping to escape the rain and we did..until we went out fishing in my jon boat we got poured on.. and it got some water in it... most of it drained out but i discovered a problem.. if any water gets in the left or right side of the under deck.. it dosent drain to the bilge hole..so i've got to get a hole into the stringer somehow..
i'm not sure how i'm going to paint it yet but i do have an air compressor and sprayer.. i dont have the filter/regulator hooked up though.

i'll have pics for yall later.. i'm not at the house..

alright updates are over on the build thread

http://www.bassfishin.com/bassfishin...ad.php?t=15434

now..

the casting deck..
i've got an idea on how i'm gunna build it, lay 2x4's along the sides in the front seat area then attach one to each side, level and come back for my distance. What do yall suggest on the distance i come back and how should i design it

I was thinking maybe 2 small doors on it and enclose the side towards the back.

I dont wanna be spearing waves so it needs to be light so i'm gunna use 3/8" plywood on it and stud material. I'm also gunna add support in the middle so i can put a kingpin seat in

any other ideas?

well.. no floor progres.. tomorrow i've gotta do that little bit of cutting in the bilge well.. get it all right.. then we've gotta make another front floor.. and finnaly.. Thompson Water Seal it..I've already got it.. and while i was in Florence, the baitmonkey got me good.. and anthony.. we split everything except the rod and the couple lures he got

Thompson Water seal, Exterior screws ,Silicone Sealent,The brass drain tube,Value pack of 25 hooks and 100 weights,6 rod rack,50lb scale ,reel oil and he got a new spinnin rod, rapala suspending jerkbait , a frog and some worms. The man at the marine store is gunna let me borrow his flanging tool as soon as i need it. my uncle works down the road so he can go pick it up the day before i'll need it.

Well when we got home he got the bondo on the back sanded pretty flat so it needs a skim coat.. And i hooked up the control box.

the little cable started slipping from the hard pressure on it, but i took it off then tightened the cable screw things.. then put it back and routed it how it'll probally go.

then..

wait what? whats he standing on?

Yeahhhhhhhh.. we got it built.. that part weighed 23 lbs on that new scale.. so i figure the whole thing weighs about 40 since the other half didnt have the main beam

i've got to get a little aluminum brace made for it [ i made one for the other side] tomorrow and then get the plywood cut for the top.

Then i'm gunna cut the doors out. and then hinge them and then get back on the floor..

we looked at carpet today.. a 6x8 rug is 17.00 or its 52c per square foot.. i'm going to carpet the FLOOR then do the deck so i can remove it.. i'm planning on bracketing it to the floor using a type of L bracket.. so theres not holes all in the wood if i take it up.

because my grandpa said i'm going to regret the deck because he said hes fished out that boat and you need the side to lean on but i said every new bass boat in production has a deck like 4" from the top and mines 6".. he said.. well its your boat i guess... if its windy we'll fish out the back... where there wont be a deck..

and because my dad said.. i guess you took the top off and fixed the transom like i told you, i said no the steel plates going on it and no we just built that.. and he said well its gunna go 15 mph..but whatever..

so i can take it out if need be.

Well still no floor progress..

but...

its the most redneck thing i've ever created.. but its a deck, i can stand on it and its almost done..

i've still got to box the back side in and then make the doors..the lighter colored wood on the motor side of the deck is 1/2" and the doors will be 1/2" because i need the support i can get on those areas since theres no support under them hardly.

then i've gotta carpet it but tomorrow i'm going to get the rail sanded and re-bondo'd.. as soon as i can get to it so hopefully by tomorrow evening it'll be hardened enough that i can sand it and get the console back in.

and i've got to add a skim coat to this

I'm going to tell my uncle to get the flanging tool from the marine store man tomorrow so i can put it in thursday and i can maybe get to the lake friday or saturday.. i wanna test it out then i'll put the second floor in if its not already done by then.

I'm gunna mount that tomorrow too..

Then the motor afterwards.. or at latest thursday

No where near as rednecky as my boat, the others will tell you. I've set new standards for rednecky.

haha after i get the doors made, i'm going to thompson water seal the deck..

the container says a light coat is sufficent and it will cover 200-300 sq ft

after i get everything good once.. i'll go back again

well lazycricket and i have this thing really rigged..

the studs are ones we had.. and they are put to the main beams with like 4 screws toe-screwed [toe-nailed..haha but toe-screwed]

and then on some they were rickety so i went and got some thin aluminum from the back of a dryer and cut it into strips and put two holes in it and screwd it to the two pieces..

then that deck is made of 6 diffrent pieces of wood and 2 diff thicknesses of wood

theres a lip on the stern side, just not the bow side..i may throw some wood on that tomorrow.. or atleast a little piece..

This boat is being built around the idea of two fishermen, me and anthony... then the capablilty to carry 3.. one on the livewell.. one driving and one in the pass. seat..
And I weigh 135, anthony about 145. were both about 5 8"...
