Default Math taught in schools

Fifty Years of Math 1958 - 2008

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter-girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain th e transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this?

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

1. Teaching Math In 1950s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit ?

2. Teaching Math In 1960s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

3. Teaching Math In 1970s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

4. Teaching Math In 1980s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

5. T eaching Math In 1990s

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it's ok. )

6. Teaching Math In 2008

Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho?

I can't agree with you anymore!! You wonder about these kids (or adults) these days. I will totally agree with you on #6. While I was at MSU (Mich. State Univ.) our math department was run by foreigners. Calc 4 (Diffy Screw) was hard enough but coming from a non-English speaking person was much, much harder....

My Cal 4 professor could fluently speak 6 languages and English was the 4th one he learned. Lucky for us he handed out notes written by his assistant. The man was brilliant but somewhat difficult to understand.

The toughest one I had before I left was Calc 252 (I think) taught by a visiting professor from the University of Shanghai, Doctor Hu. (not from the tv show) I can laugh about it now, but it was not funny when the highest scores in the class on his exams were in the low 60% range.

Yea, I had foreign professors in finance, accounting and econ. All very tough to understand and in subjects that I found a little more difficult to begin with.

I'll ask my wife if there is any reason for all of the foreign professors, now I am curious. She has taught at several colleges so maybe she will know. I wonder if there are many Americans teaching Banach Space (Dr. Hu's specialty) in China?

The problem is that most people have almost no use for simple math anymore , how many people still pay for their daily purchases with cash ? you don't get change back for a credit card . And most people are happy to get dumber as their life is made easier and the thought process is taken out of their daily routine .

I am happy to say I could answer the first part of the question with little effort....

As for the question 5.) I have an answer as well: Screw the birds and squirrels and all that politically correct BS. Oops guess I failed....

Answer: If we make squirrel stew and bbq the birds, their home will not be a worry to them anymore.

Problem was she didn't have a calculator to figure it out. Someone call B.K. and let them know that they caused the problem by not catering to the needs of their worker.

Now that right there is funny! Sadly, though, it ain't far off the mark with all the PC BS going on.

I asked my wife why she thought there were so many foreign professors in math and she said from what she has seen there are mostly foreign students in graduate degree programs for math. Her friend has a PHD in math and was the only white person in her program, let alone a female. Now why is that?

I see it every day . But then I see the ones that will succeed and do work hard too. It kind of balances out.
