Default Brain storm with me -- Balancing rods.

Was down in the ol basement today and walked by my fishing stuff. Saw the pile of rods leaning against the wall, and saw my old shakespeare. "Thing's butt ugly." I thought to myself. "The handle just looks bad and is to thick. Might look nice a spit grip!"

Well it's January and I missed my ride to the basketball game, so why the heck not!

Yup! Decided to get the knife and sand paper out and make some athletic improvements. Split the grip and booted the fore-grip (kinda, lol).

Well she turned out pretty decent if I say so my self, better anyway IMO... 2nd time I ever done it. I could spiffy it up a little if I really wanted to but than what'll I do tomorrow? lol

Well when I took the fore-grip off, I also took part of the foregrip off I also took the part that slides over the reel foot, so I gotta duct tape it on there, but who cares! lol Looks better I think.

Unfortunately my esthetic improvements threw the balance WAY off (bout 4.5" away from real steam). So I was wondering if yall could help me brain storm some ways to help balance her out! I thought I could take big ol long screw and screw it up into the butt and into the hallow blank.

Any ideas folks?

Here's a pic (like the table cloth?)... wish I'da took a before pic. lol But here's what I looked like.

When we fishermen think comments like this are normal, it's no wonder a lot of us are single!

An easy way to balance it is to get a rubber tip like goes on a chair leg and weight it either with some lead disk sinkers or even quarters. If you can't find one that fits BPS has them for about $10 that wok well. I use them mainly on my flipping/pitching rods.

lmao. makes sense IB.

I'll give em a gander Reb. Was hoping I could keep from throwing the bulky balance cap on there, but if it's balanced it's better!

You did a nice job Sammy, it looks good. Was the grip not solid cork? It looks like it must have been cork tape with foam underneath.

As far as balancing it, that's a tough one. I think your best bet would be to remove the butt you have and either add some weight inside the blank or install a weighted butt. You can buy fighting butts that would glue on easily after adding weights inside the blank. Or you could install something like this.

Yeah Joe, I don't believe it was real cork... just foam!

Thanks for the link btw, looks pretty good! Think I could take the black foam cap off and replace it with that!

It turned out really nice Sam! I was going to suggest Rebs recommendation. It's an easy fix.

If the rubber butt cap has a metal brand identification plate in it, pry the plate out to be replaced later. With a drill bit safely smaller than the inside diameter of the rod blank, drill a hole through the butt cap into the hollow of the blank. Ream the hole to expose the inside diameter of the blank. Shape or mold a lead cylinder to fit snugly into the exposed rod blank. You'll need to determine the weight needed by hanging lead from the rod butt while you balance it on a fulcrum. Replace the identification plate or cover the butt in some ingenious manner.

Great idea! I think I'll give it a whirl! I could probably bring some lead in and melt it down in my chemistry class too!
