ok, use darker colored lures. worms cranks and topwaters are good choices. try out those and see if they work. if those dont work then try out different lures untill u find the one. but the biggest thing is dark colored lures.

I think the best way to approach a piece of structure like a downed tree is with several different lures. I'd first use a spinnerbait to get any fish hanging around the outside of the tree just cast it on each side a couple of times. Next I'd go with a shallow diving square-billed crank to fish closer into the cover and get any of the fish lurking a bit deeper in the branches. Next I'd go with a finnesse worm (senkos work great) or pig-n-jig to really pick the piece of structure apart. Once you can find where most of the fish are positioned, you can get an idea of where they'll be on all the other trees and fish those spots immediately.

I don't think a carolina rig is the best application around timber. A t-rigged plastic would be better for keeping your rigs from getting caught up. And PJN or t-rigged plastic would be much better. If the water is stained use rattles, and baits that move more water, or make vibrations. I would definately try the suspending crankbaits, especailly if they have rattles built in. A weightless plastic bait also will work very well in these situations, and easier to keep from hooking on to the timber, but requires a slower presentation.

depending a water temp if it is warm -above 50-i would bounce a critter bait all over the trees.but pooper is right throw a square billed crank or blade bait on the approach to the tree.
if it is cold i would cut the front hook off the front treble of a suspending rattle bait.-like the cordell suspending spot-and fear no evil run it thru the tree if ya anit getting hung up you anit fishing it right.

remember i like to use light line but doing this i rather have 12-14 pound test

You may already know this , but start on the outside of the tree and work your way in.
Catch the bass that are away from the tree and then catch the bass that are in the main portion of the tree.

I forgot to say something earlier that zokers post reinded me of. After a cold front small 4" creature baits are awesome for picking apart cover. I got one free baby action cat as a sample from larry and I caught six bass on it fishing it right through brushpiles. I'd go with some of those or a small strike king wild thang, cause the fact that they're tube baits makes the hookset really easy.

Around trees you want to use something you not going to lose right away!. Try using guarded hooks something that if you drag you bait across you won't get hung up.
