Default Micropterus Interruptus...my Longtime Winter Foe

Anyone else near insane from not fishing yet? I'm jonesing really bad for some chuckin' and windin'. I even found myself dreaming about moving somewhere warm, or even really cold, so at least I could ice fish. I wonder if there's a 12-step group somewhere that could help.

I have been questioning my recent move farther north and why the heck I am not in Texas or Florida right now.

Went fishing yesterday and it wasn't the most productive 3 hours of fishing. The dams on both ends of the lake were open and no trolling motor could keep you steady, still managed 9 fish in 3 hours, 3 of which were keepers. Biggest was close to 4. Would have whacked them if the water wasn't rolling so bad... The fish were schooling in the mouths of the creeks right on the mudline from the main river in anywhere from 4-10 feet of water. Wouldn't touch anything but a shakyhead for some reason.

Probably cuz they are just a little too chilly to chase anything that isn't an easy catch.

Thats what I figured, but every fish we caught was chunky and 2 of them regurgitated shad. and still seemed pretty active by the way they bit. The bite wasn't real light, more like a hard thump and run.

Yea, that's not too surprising though, they are opportunistic feeders, and an inactive shad can be an easy target, the chance is also there that they are still on the feed and didn't like the depth, action or method that you were presenting reaction baits.

True, I'm sure if I had more time I would have figured something else out besides a shakyhead, but the water was up way too high and rolling way too hard. Water Temp was 48.3 degrees btw.

Well thats near sauna temps. Up here we are dealing with like 36-39. I can still probably catch a few fish on blade baits and spoons, and definetly on hair jigs assuming I can find them, but its way cold out and the hours per fish are high, although the ones you do catch are big. I caught my pb (no longer personal best) two years ago on a hair jig in december. water temp was 39.5

I hear ya nofear, and I'm right there with ya. I would suggest maybe trying some river fishin if you have one near you. Not sure how far the Kankakee river is from you but there is some good pike and walleye fishin in that river durring the winter months.

You're right, Keith, though the Kankakee is a bit far from me (Evansville).

While this Winter is a bust, I am hopeful I will not be sitting inside next December. I think I have found a good hang-over gunwale ladder for my boat so I can more safely hit the Ohio River next year. I also want to get one of those blow-up type life jackets you can keep on all of the time. There is a good spot for Stripers, Sauger, and 80+ lb Blue cats here local (Newburgh Dam), though I may need to upgrade my anchor.

It appears Winter is just another opportunity for the monkey to sneak up and bite.
