Tying on Vs. snap swivel

whats better when using hard baits? ( rat-l-traps, husky jerk baits, ect.)

tying them on using the Rapala knot, or just using a snap swivel?

snap swivel seems quicker when you wanna change up lures frequently compared to having to re-tie everytime...

To me it is faster to re tie.
Some people like the snap swivel on crank baits to give them more wabble.

i use a snap swivel cuz my arthuritis is getting bad again (warmer days). but i would rather tie em on.

I use Norman speed clips with hard lures - I change lures often and it's much easier and faster than tying knots all day. I also remove the split rings from hard baits that I'll be using the speed clip with.

i used to be a big snap swivel guy, but now i have enough rods, and throw so little hardbaits, that i just tie on, it takes the same amout of time anyway.

Snaps are fine if you prefer them, just make sure you get the right ones. I only use a Duolock snap like these .

Board member Woody turned me on to the duo-lock type of snaps. They work very well, and are small...something I consider very important.

I think most of the complaints you hear from people who say snaps or swivels affect the lure's action too much are just using one that's too big. If you're using 12lb test, you don't need a 100lb test snap swivel.

On a side note, while I prefer just the snap for the sake of small size, I have heard some say that the swivel causes their crankbait to spin. I would like to completely dispel that myth. If your crankbait is spinning, the bill needs to be tuned, you are pulling it too fast, or it is fouled...period. A swivel is a device that prevents torque (the thing that causes spin), so as to not let your line get twisted up. I use swivels on all of my trolling rigs for just that reason. Before I started using swivels, If I ever fouled up on weeds, the line would be twisted to heck by the time I got the crank pulled in to clear it. If your line had the ability to prevent the lure from spinning, it wouldn't get twisted up to begin with.

In essense, if you prefer to use a snap swivel instead of a snap, go for it. The only negative will be increased size and weight.

I like using the Duo snaps in size #3 (or is it #2?)...Hell I cant remember
I like using them for crankbaits,jerkbaits,and flukes.
One thing I think is important is to consistantly check your knot!...After a few good fights,I would retie the snap on.
Everything else I tie on.

This is a risk, true...but almost eliminated if you use a coastlock-type snap like this:

I'm a true believer on that now. Back on 4/12/10, I lost a big one from it straighting the snap. (I got to watch it shake it's head 3 times, and it was gone, I was about to retie, and noticed it pulled straight) I'll never use one again!! Now just a swivel, I have no problems with them, they do help with line twist. IMO

Mike...how do you attach the lure with a surgeon's loop? Do you just pass the loop through the lure eye, and then around the lure? Seems like you would need a very large loop.

I like to use the BPS fast lock snaps and they've always worked fine.

I trust my knots much more than any snap swivel. Lost too many lures when the snap came open.

I went to Cabela's and picked up a pack of those duo-lock snaps.. they're great so far,
not to hard to open/close. quick changes and its small & light

the other ones i was using made my suspending lures nose dive a little to much.

I get mine from Jann's Netcraft. Less expensive than from BPS or Cabela's, and Jann's is closer to me than BPS or Cabelas.

I read bill siemantel recommends snaps for swimbaits , and he dont catch dinks if you know what I mean...

Tie, and then do whatever you want as long as you tie… I would be curious to know what manufactures recommendations are? I am willing to bet they say tie.

There are benefits and special needs that require snaps etc. however, as NF points when torque sets in and the crank bait wants to spin, a snap allows the spinning momentum to continue. I think it is too risky to use snaps. I have not timed myself tieing vs. using a snap - but I would say the extra time spent all be it maybe 2-3 more seconds is worth the peace of mind knowing your tied on not snapped on. I cannot say I have ever had a snap failure but then again I do not use them.
