To have actually fished ky lake one has to go south as only ten percent of it is in ky,meaning one is severely limiting their experience if they stop at ken lake.
Their is grass up north but seldom tops and one must either spend a lot of time on the water or be a guide to know where.
From 15 miles above paris landing to I 40 there is vegetation, lastyear lacking somewhat above but plenty below.Coontail, hydrilla some years, pond weed, reeds rushes cattails, yellow primrose and all kinds of lilly pads from dollar lillys to american lotus, some in mere patches some an acre in size and some several hundred acres.
One of half a doz I know of,shucks only lived here 4 years.Ill find more.
If I cant touch bottom easily with a 7 ft rod im to deep.

Taken last summer heres a mixed bag in a small cove

Anything green in the water cattails will do,note the frog likes it

Went down to Cuba Landing the day before yesterday to run the boat, and the water was 52 degrees in the creeks. The main river was around 44-45 around new johnsonville. GIve it a lil while and that ugly brown color will dissapear into a sea of green.

Considering im running from Paris Landing thated be a long run, always wanted to trailer down to there and go south from there to say parsons, several backwater lakes available.
Most when one leaves the main resemble a backwater bayou more than a flooded lake, from Beaver dam on south.
NewJohnsonville is friendly,I love birdsong but fell off the ramp seems end of it is broken and at winter pool virtually unusable.
Almost all of those coves or bays contain veggies,ABA championship was won just outside of birdsong on that flat on the main, off isolated grass balls.
Your right warming quickly

Cuba Landing's ramp is almost the same as Birdsong's. We had a time trying to load the boat without falling off the end of the ramp. They really need to do an extension on the ramps so people can still load and unload without a hassle.

I'll be headed up your way as soon as those drop fish turn on good. Heard of anybody catchin em right now?

Yeah Tom ,but he catches them at newjohnsonville or near.
I do well generally under that rr bridge, but seldom the hump just above it.
Cuba landing looked like it had a lot of new stake beds when I last went by it last month.
Trip to Nashville had a heart attack, seems thats where the specialists are at.
It did look muddy, and shallow.Figure those smaller ramps since made back in what 1960 are tad overdue for repairs, other half of the ramps were former roads that went into the lake not marked anywhere but locals use them.
For the money TVA made for condemnation and flooding then selling some of that later that they were never supposed to,should pave a couple in gold for us.
It is however seldom managed for fishing only somewhat for flood control mostly for power production, they kept it a over a ft above pool after the flood until late july. Most likly to kill grass which clogs the turbines.
We just sort of reap the benefits available,it is just seldom with that thought in mind with tva.
I love Ky lake, but dont share the same views about TVA.

Good vegetation is sort of the achilles heel around these parts. I fish quite a bit below nashville on the Cumberland and there was some nice grass a couple of years back on the main river channel. I understand that the Corps of engineers has to produce power but what reason would they have to open the flood gates wide open all the way across and then close them for a week and do it all over again??? All the time never having more than one generator on.

They also seem to like to kill the striper fishing in the spring when a few boats try to get a good drift.

Coe is different in that it manages for commercial traffic then flood control ,the power production is a by product sold to local power companies for a minimal amount.
They to have a set pattern they dont like trees in the water, there arnt over a doz trees in the water with actual depth around them over 1 or 2 ft of water,. from Cinninatti to Morgantown ,W.Va on the ohio river for that reason.
Ravenswood pool generally has grass galore the rest just have it behind parked barges etc, like anywhere else flooding hurts it the grass, and sometimes those in charge of the movement of water tend to be lax in removing it,knowing the damage it causes to the grass.
If one checks the creel stats last year was the worst one in about ten years, for numbers, just not in hefty bass.2008 was about the best out of ten.
And not magic grass galore runing from paris landing to past newjohnsonville in one long string called the 40 mile grass bed locally.
The small fish we catch at 10-14 represent the next generation of bass to be 15 shortly, those 6 pders making up the 30 lb + sacks are from years past.
A spot on the ohio river takes 5 years to obtain 12 in,here in two it does that, when and if they let it grow.
But another reason im into veggies not grass, everything green in the water will attract them, even the flooded buck brush, try frogging those flooded islands.

Where is most of the grass at on Kentucky Lake? I hear a lot of talk about New Johnsonville, but have not made that long run from Paris Landing.

Just have to open your eyes, all veggies arnt grass.
Not last year but year before pondweed from 78 bridge north on east bank to the island, the islands on west side had thick topped grass, even last year lilly pads were present in the state park area just not navigatable by boat until near summer pool, they were already up prior to this large amount of water that came in in the back end.
Big sandy has reeds and rushes by its islands, and grass by the very back down by big sandy.
Standing rock creek has a spot right at the mouth directly under the bald earth area, marked with a metal pole .Yellow primrose by some northern docks, found dollar lilly even last year in a few nearby places, duck weed, etc. Most of my pics taken within 6 miles of paris landing, hint if it looks like you cant get your boat there but its wet try taking it.
Back of this picture is rt 79 and 200 yards away is the ramp at paris landing
Taken last year

Last but no least with your boat in deep water one seldom finds much, take boat in start at 4 ft work from there to shallow water
Right where you would turn a boat around is where I start at and dont stop till have to start pulling troller up.In such a place as this pic one can get out and not get knees wet wading to shore yet bass are in it.Fair share of cottonmouths as well.
Use big motor maybe 4-8 miles per outing, not running anywhere, use troller even more per outing,24 gal of gas lasts half of the summer.Yes newjohnsonville ,birdsong ,beaver pond all have veggies, you know about them due to some being on the main, you will find even more going skinny dipping way in the backs of those bays.
If you desire to fish newjohnsonville I do as well cheaper to drive there launch there and not a long run or ride its like 45 min away by car.Ive fished newjohnsonville and birdsong with out ever starting my big motor, weighed in over 17pds at yellow creek open and was barely out of sight of the ramp.I do get passed by others going shallower but they have mud buddies on a tin lizzy,or waders and a 12 ga as duck hunting.
Lastly when in or on a ramp in a bay I dont go out I go in from there if possible. Most go the wrong way.

We hit Kentucky lake today but did not do so well. We fished Standing rock all day only caught 3, 2 were good fish. I was throwing a white shallow to medium diving crankbait and did not get a bite. What are the fish hitting the best?

Sliderhead-6 in worm, chrome and blue rattle trap or lazer eye, bandit gray speckleback, mostly lbl bank, main points as going into a bay and secondary ones.East bank is clearer.Rocky banks a red one will do nicely.(trap lazer eye)
Normally its a jerkbait bite but the high water sort of interferes, lake is over summer pool gates wide open, about 190,000 cfs
Even so twas a very nice day to be out wasnt it,71 f.Fish have stayed about where they were if you were catching them 5-7 ft a week ago add three ft to that,as located almost same area just a tad deeper now that its higher. Most are resisting the urge to go shallower,as lake will fall, benefit however is water was warmer than in the lake prior.
Back end north side directly across from fat daddys last year had topped grass, its shallow past that laydown tree most dont venture there to find it.And at the mouth its got a long shallow point made like a mace with its thick end next to 16 ft of water and the handle touching shore.A bald eagle frequents that area a lot as well. The bald earth above it serves as a long distance marker and when close theirs a steel post driven in on the apex.

Default Try these frog

Best frogs on the market hands down! Drag these over the lilly pads slowly, when you get to open water speed it up for 20 yards then pause. Bass will nail this thing, it a great experience if you like a lot of action from your topwater. I am a little bias but try the diver frog or others on the market and you will see the difference.
