I don't think he would have the chance, the electric would beat him to the punch.

According to the Helsinki Worm Study of 2004 the ideal depth for placing an electrified pole in the ground in order to entice worms to the surface is 27 5/8 inches. There were also some decent results with 29 1/2 but 27 and 5/8 consistently produced the best results. Hope this helps...

"Nightcrawlers are a type of earthworm. They are highly beneficial because they aerate soil, allowing water and oxygen to penetrate more easily into the ground. Their feeding and excrement helps recycle nutrients and fertilize the soil. Nightcrawlers also feed on thatch, a layer of live and dead plant material that can accumulate at the soil surface and reduce the penetration of water and fertilizer.
However, as nightcrawlers feed on soil and plant material, they leave behind a waste product called castings. Nightcrawlers deposit castings in their burrows or at entrances at ground level forming conical mounds at the soil surface. These mounds can be seen in early to mid-spring when nightcrawlers are first active and again during fall. During late spring and summer, when weather becomes warmer, nightcrawlers move deeper into the soil and are not normally seen."

We used to catch them in PA after sunset. Best time to catch them was after an evening thunderstorm. Use a flashlight and walk very slowly. Do not shine the flashlight directly on the worms. Once you spot one move slowly towards it. Bend down and catch it quickly. They are usually only half exposed and will retract into their burrow if given the chance.

This is only a little different than going on a snipe hunt!

Somehow I feel obligated to say, leave the worms alone and go chase girls. It might not be such an electrifying experience as worm hunting, but the notion will grow on you over time. P N J

An unusual fact about earthworms is that they are hermaphrodites, they are both male and female at the same time. Earthworms breathe through their skins and must stay in moist soil. If they dry out, they will die. Every day, an earthworm passes an amount of soil equal to its body weight through its digestive system. Although flatworms, roundworms, and segmented worms are all called worms, they are not closely related. "Worm" is not a scientific term. It just means something long and skinny without legs. In previous centuries, people called snakes "worms," too, even though snakes are vertebrate animals. This is serious stuff. Snails laugh at those little things all the time, all because they are little freaks, and that's why they craw at night.
