Go to this link, http://pages.infinit.net/fishing/bait101.htm and do "EXACTLY" what it says. You have to take baby steps first with baitcasting, if you think you are gonna grab one, and just start throwing it like a pro, you have a lot to learn. They take Practice, and more practice, and more practice, and more practice. Then just when you think you are getting the hang of it, you need more pratice, and more practice.

When I first got it, I loved it and hated it. It's the best reel I've ever owned. It's sooo smooth and it casts soooo far. When I owned my Pflueger Purist, I thought I could cast without getting a backlash on any reel. When I casted my Garcia, I had a mess. You can set it properly, then as you get better, slowly loosen the tension knob. I barely ever use it now.

Yeah. Set it - then cast to see if you set it properly. Adjust it some more until you can cast just right.

Did you get a Revo SX or STX? The rod depends on which techniques and baits you'll be using.

Cool. Where did you get the STX for $150 from? For topwater... I'd say a 6'6" Medium or Medium Heavy. If you're using poppers with treble hooks, you don't want much backbone, but if you're using buzzbaits and frogs, you want a heavier longer rod for a more powerful hookset. Are you tall or short? The 7' rod will be easier to handle for tall people. Just don't get tooo picky or detailed.
Then you'll end up a confused mess. Like me

Cool. I'm a little bit more than an inch taller. I like 6'6" rods. If you're fishing buzzbaits, the long rod helps to lift the buzzbait onto the surface of the water quickly. I know it sounds little, but all the little things put together in a days worth of fishing is a LOT. A longer rod also helps when you're fishing with toads, because you want a good hookset, and the longer the rod, the more line it moves with one sweep. For popping baits, a short rod is lighter, causing less fatigue, and it's also easier to twitch. A 6'6" is a great all around rod.

Run the baitcaster til you backlash so bad you need to pick it out at home, then switch to your spinner. That way you get practice in and can roll to something more familiar when you bugger it up too bad to fix quickly. This works for me. Still in the early stages of learning a baitcaster mysself. Seems I can rip off about 30 or 40 good or at least decent casts, then WHAM a great blue heron takes up residence in my reel... time to switch rods...
