Default Brush Hogs

Hey, i have seen some talk about brush hogs on here. I was wondering, when you say brush hog, do you mean a full size brush hog, or a baby brush hog. A full size one seems to big.

NO WAY is a Full size Brush Hog too big Bass will eat them, but Lizards are a Little better I just had a 6" bass completely swallow a 6" Lizard, with only the tail sticking out of it mouth. I had to get it back, but Many times the larger bait will be easier to spot in murky water, or at night. Never think a Bass won't attack something as long as it is, including snakes.

It really depends on where and how you are fishing them-in colder water I use the baby size, but when the water is warm I go with the bigger size, but I experiment and try to find what the fish want. I really like the baby size on a C-rig.

Thanks for all the info. But I was wondering...what conditions make a brush hog better than a worm. Is a brush hog a big fish bait or is it just more productive? ???[glow=red,2,300][/glow]

Now that is a good question. The answer I would give is it depends. Two factors come into play for me: confidence and water clarity. Kind of an odd combo, but here is what I mean:

Confidence: as with any bait, it seems like the more confidence you have in a bait the more fish you catch on it. I'd say I have confidence in both.

Water clarity: Here is really where the decision comes into play. In real clear water, I would go with the worm-and it may be a straight tailed worm like a Trickworm. As water gets less visibility, fish start to rely on their senses other than sight, and a brush hog with all it's appendages and bulk will move more water, put out more vibration, and be easier for the fish to find than a worm is. Like any other bait in fishing it is a judgement call. The easiest way to figure it out is to throw one and then the other and see what the fish want. Hope that helps a little!

No insults, seaphantom-it is what is known as a creature bait:

I like to break the arms to give them a little more motion.

Regarding the size, I'm sure there is a time for the baby brush hogs...but the whole point of using a brush hog is to imitate something big and bulky, so I use the big ones and flip them in heavy cover.

I much prefer lizards over brush hogs.

A pond I fish at, the bass eat more "creatures" than it does worms. I get more bites on them. 6" Lizard in greenpumpkin or watermelon/rd+blk flake = amazing results.

Last night i caught 3 6's, 2 5's and 6more over 2 1/2. All on lizards!! Was a ton of fun in my float tube!

Like the brush hog and other creature baits. I prefer to split the front arms w/ a blade or the paddle tails into two or four parts. This provides more action and when floating down appears to spread out the bait making it look bigger. (Hopefully more appetizing). Just something I do.
