Default Spinnerbait trailer hooks

Does anyone rig the tubing over the eye of the trailer hook to keep it from dangling? I know that this isn't necessarily the accepted method but it seems to keep the weeds off.

you can do that, or punch holes out of coffe can lid.

Never heard that before but sounds like a good idea. How exactly does it work?

yes, i do use a rubber hose (actually a surgercial tube) to put over the trailer hook eye. holds the trailer hook in place. also was told another way to secure the trailer hook. take an old wornout worm or lizard ya got lying in yer boat. cut off a chunk (little) and use that as well. zooker told me this trick. just thread it over the eye of the trailer and hook it on the spinner. it does work, even better that the little surgical tubing. fits tighter i think.

I would highly recommend not placing the rubber tubing over the eye of the trailer hook. A freely dangling trailer hook is not only more weedless, but you will hook substantially more fish that strike. You should always thread the trailer hook onto the main hook first, then apply a small piece of rubber tubing to the main hook and slide it down to the deepest part of the hook's bend to keep the trailer hook in place. Never, ever thread the trailer hook's eye into the tubing.. it won't allow the trailer hook to collapse into the fish when a fish swipes at the side of your bait. I cannot stress the proper application of the trailer hook enough. Always let it dangle freely behind the main hook.

Yeah, putting the tubing over the eye isnt that great.

On some spinnerbaits, I took to adding "permanant" trailer hooks by putting the hook on there, then taking the smallest size of electrical plastic tie and going tight around the hook. It will not come off, ever, without scissors and it allows the hook to swing free.

I've also used those ties to reattatch skirts.

get a hole punch and punch holes in the middle part of the coffe can lid so you have some plastic circles. then put your trailer hook eye over the main hook's tip, then push the plastic circle over the point of the main hook and it keeps the trailer from comming off

lol, WTL. That is a good idea. I never use the surgical tubing over the hook eye. I'll use it in the same way as the coffe can lid. And when I run out, I'll use the coffee can lid circle.

I don't use trailer hooks. Spinnerbaits are my favorite bait and the extra hook snagging grass or me isn't worth the aggravation.

I like to use trailer hooks too...I think it gives me more hook ups.....I usually use different types of heat shrink tubing....conforms to the main hook really well...

You can also use the skirt rings used for making spinnerbait and jig skirts for the free swinging method of using a trailer hook. I prefer those over the rubber tubing.

hhhhmmmmmmmm kevin. come to think of this. .........and maybe i was TOLD wrong. not by you zooker. by the fella that told me how to use the surgical tubing in the first place some 20 years ago.i see your point of letting it "dangle". gonna have to re-do my trailer hooks i think. and i haven't been using them alot lately. and i never thought of putting them on buzz's till i talked to zooker. thanks guys.

Same here. I use the hole punch on a coffee can lid method.

One other good thing about heat shrink tubing is that it comes in a lot of colors....put it just in front of the trailer hook...works minty....

the trailer hook added to your spinnerbait is kinda like an extra insurance policy against short strikes and adds to an already great bait . I don't fish one all the time but if I notice that my bait is getting bumped and not producing fish then a trailer hook is a give in . and ejvesper it is alot more weedless than you would think it to be .
