Wacky rigged drop shot?
I just bought a couple of packs of 3" Yum Dingers on clearance thinking they might work well on drop shots. I then got to thinking they might work well wacky rigged on a drop shot.
Has anyone tried wacky rigging a drop shot? If so, what type of worm of did you use? |

Hmm, seems like a good idea. I might try just wacky rigging a worm today on ds and try it. I havent fished it in so long that i actually missed 2 on drop shot this weekend. Also missed an explosive topwater hit, and let 2 get away, one which fought pretty hard.

Yeah, I've done it, works just fine, a little better in darker water because it'll give off a little more vibration. But boil them things a some salty water before you use them, should give them better action!

Ive been using the drop shot for about a year now but ive never tried wacky rigging it, but since you gave me the idea ill try it with a gary yamamoto senko. It may be a little heavy but worth a try.

I would think it would work extremely well..especially if you add a little crawling action.

Wacky rigging a DS rig absolutley works wonders on pressured fish. Alot of time the fish around here are pressured, so when a straight tailed worm isn't getting bit while being nose hooked, I wacky rig it on the DS rig. I use the same hook, and most of the time dropshot a Strike King 4" Finesse Worm.

Jrob, I definitely think it will work with the small Dinger. I've caught fish on a wacky rigged dropshot with a Zoom or Yum finesse worm.
I'd even fish the 3" Dinger nosed hooked on a DS like normal. BB

Do not wacky rig it!!!! The wacky rig DOES NOT WORK ON THE DROP SHOT! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME DOING THIS!
Kidding aside, wacky rigging on the drop shot has been a very productive method for me. Shhhhh!!!

Hey Jrob,
I just started using the DS the last half of 2009 and towards the very end of the year, I decided to try wacky-rigging 5" Yamasenko (MotorOil with Red flakes) on it. I "practiced" with it by putting it in a couple feet of water right next to shore where I could see it, and then watched its action as I moved the rod tip in various ways. Once I was satisifed I halfway knew what I was doing with imparting a little action on it if i wanted to, I went to fishing. It was literally on the next cast that I hauled in the only LM I've ever caught over 5 pounds -- 5lb 2oz. to be exact. Give the wacky-rigged DS a try! |

You can also try a variation when using worms......hook the worm wacky about an inch and a half from the front end of the worm......makes it lunge irratically when shaken.....going in different directions as you work it.

Noodle rig. Been using this for Senkos for quite a few years. Works real good around docks.

Works good with Zoom finesse worms and trick worms too! I like taking the watermelon red flake and dipping both ends in Chartreuse Spike it. If you fish around a lot of vegetaion try using the Gamakatzu weedless hook in 1/0.

It does work well in areas without much vegetation. Unfortunately there is so much in my stretch of FL, it has to be done texas rig or I pull up more grass than fish.

Hopefully thats a joke Nitro, it does work very well in open areas without much vegetation.
Think about it: - normal drop shot is worm on the end of a hook where you have one long worm wiggling for the fish. - wacky style drop shot has 2 shorter pieces of worm wiggling for the fish Normal drop shot tends to work better for bigger quality fish whereas wacky drop shot tends to work better on quantity of fish. Also many tournament fishermen in Japan actually use a double wacky setup. First worm through middle, then second worm also through middle but turned 90º so it is an X on the hook... so you have 4 shorter pieces of worms which bring plenty of fish of all sizes. |

I got the chance to go out to my favorite pond for a few hours this morning. Inspired by NoFear I decided to fish the drop shot exclusively. I caught about 10 fish on baits ranging from the aforementioned 3" Yum Dinger to Zoom Finesse worms wacky rigged. I also caught several on a 4" Yamamoto Shad Shaped worm, I thought this bait was great for drop shotting.
I tried the Dinger wacky rigged and did catch one on it but it's so short and bulky it didn't seem to have a lot of action. The Finesse worm was perfect wacky rigged though. I didn't catch anything over about 2 lbs but I did have success with a new technique (wacky drop shot) and got to give my new spinning rod a good work out on some hard fighting spring time bass. All in all a very good Easter morning! |

I did a wacky rigged drop shot yesterday with a green senko at a small shallow pond and got a nice chunky 18" bass (no scale but I suspect in the 2.5-3 lb range)...
