Default Favorite Lure or favorite color

I think this has happened to all of us. You get to the water and find the bite is on, the extreme bite. But there seems to be one style of lure thats hot and only in certain color and every thing else is extremly slow. Would you rather have the right color in a totally different style of lure or the right lure in the total opposite color pattern?.... Example: The bites on for deep diving cranks in shad color, you have deep diving crank but only in firetiger. But, you also have your go to lure in the perfect shad color but not deep diving. Which do you use?... Sorry both is not an option!

I think i'd rather have the color... if you can match the color then you can make any sort of soft plastic (tube, worm, fluke, creature) look like whatever the fish happen to be feeding on that day. So like your example, if they are hitting deep diving cranks in shad, then you could use the same colored tube and bounce it along the bottom.

Besides the stick on weights you can Carolina rig the lure.

I think depth trumps color

i would go with the deep diving crank cause if the bass are there you should at least go towards them maybe not the right color though and bamabassman has a really good idea i would have never thought of that

i used to take some split shot weights and put em bout a foot up the line. didn't seem to hinder the action that way.

Color makes no difference if you can't put it where the fish are, I would def go with the correct depth.

I wanted to add that I think color becomes less and less important the deeper you fish, most colors are filtered out within the first 10 feet of water. Blues and Purples will be the last to be filtered. After so deep most things just become shades, so if you match light colored lures or dark colored lures or patterns in general, you might be ok.

Agreed, you have to fish where the fish are.

Mark, thanks! It's kind of irronic, I was talking with the the guys at the warehouse this morning, got couple wrong sizes on my order. They told me to keep the wrong sizes and they will next day ship me right ones. Talk about a great outfit! Any way went to your attached link, and I watched the flick, thanks again, but I just wanted to clarify, did you share this with me for the video or the square bills or a great place to feed the monkey at or maybe all the above? Oh ya, you've done more than you know, I been hanging around as a guest, probably the last year or so, and I've learned alot from your threads and posts. ....... Thanks again, I need all the help I can get!

I do things the "BARTA WAY, the hard way".
If fish are eating deep cranks I'm throwing topwater.

To the real question, I think fishing the proper depth has the edge over proper color. Water clarity was not mentioned so I'll continue with water clarity as I know them in my area - which is anything but clear. The key in this instance for me is DEPTH. Fish deep & color loses some of the importance as many colors don't show well with decreased light. With low light, a lure that is close in color or shaded similiarly (light body with a dark back) will probably work as well. I believe when fishing deep, bass rely on their lateral lines to detect vibration and ears to detect sound (rattling baits) more so than sight - thus negating the importance of color.

Now, if you're fishing very clear water on a fairly sunny day, color may increase in importance. I haven't experienced fishing really clear water so I can't comment based on those water conditions.

I think the arguement was whether you'd like the exact lure the fish are hitting in a different color or the exact color but a different lure...

But for the record I would agree that the correct depth is better than just the right colors, haha.

mrmuskie, well said! Heres my input (didn't mention in earlier post because I prefer to hear what you folks are doing and why before my 2 pennies are put in), any way I'm a plastics kind of guy and currently shore fish, fairly shallow water, so I would prefer color cause plastics are pretty flexable, add weight, change from fast, slow, jerk what ever presentation you want. Thanks for reminding me about color and depth for some reason I neglect this very important aspect of lure selection all to often. Thanks everyone!
