Default Reel and rod question for froggin?

So i want to get a good frog rod and reel. I was thinking the Shimano Core any of you guys have one? or heard things about them? As for my rod i was thinking something pretty cheap so any ideas i am looking for under 10o dollars i know there better rods out there but all my fishing stuff i buy and my only job is cutting lawns so heard to get enough money. thanks

I'm not the person for reel input but as far as rods my best advice is start searching web sights between now and the end of the year. You may not be ready to buy but I've seen $100-$150 rods going for $50 plus. The deals are are even better if the manufacturer has a new line or improvement coming in 2012. You can probably find $200 rods going for $100. I've seen deals starting already.
Good luck with your adventure.

Well, IMO I wouldn't spend that much money on a Core and then put it on a 100 dollar rod. For a budget of 400 bucks I'd go half and half, spend 200 on a rod and 200 on a reel... for 200 dollars apeice you can have a Revo STX and this rod http://www.bigsowbaits.com/cistcshmo.html

Get the 76CSXHF... Awesome rods

Also have a look at the Go Green program... 10% off for old broken rods.

I'd stick a Revo STX or Daiwa Zillion (bought below retail on eBay) on a Dobyns Champion 735C.

Agreed about the reel.

Don't pay retail, too many deals on slightly used or end of year new rods. This is a newer version of the rod I use and I paid retail (years ago) before I learned to do a little looking around. This slighly used model is about $100 less than the new retail price. This is given only as an example of what can be found, you can make up your own mind as to brand, but do some looking around and you could save considerable money.

I will make my pitch for the Shimano Curado E7 or G7. I really wouldn't blow the bank on a frog rod. You don't really need a ton of sensitiveness, just a heavy back bone and a fast tip and 7-7.5' IMO. Just my .02. You could be froggin' off half the lawn jobs.

For my froggin setup I've got a Revo S matched to a 7'3" H/XF Garcia Vendetta rod spooled with 50 pound braid. This has been a great frog rod for me and it cost me about $240.00 total including taxes. If you want to wait till spring, there are usually really good deals to be had when BPS has their big spring sale going on.

Rods end of the year closeouts,I dont own any that cost over 110 dollars with tax,and do own kistler, carrot stix, diawa etc.
Reels own one 7/1 the rest are 6/3/1 and 6/4/1 , most are 80 dollar jobs,my requirements are simple be able to winch one in in thick cover and cast a min of 40 yards with say a spro jr,50 min with anything heavy like a king spro weighing 1 oz.
Toss frogs 8 months a year, dont care how pretty it is to look at,just in how it works, own no 200 dollar plus rods or 400 plus reels, not saying they wouldnt work.Like everything else must be matched to what your fishing, just dont see the need.
Americana lotus(heavy action) having different requirements than say hydrilla(med heavy).

I bought a dedicated frog rig a couple years ago and talked to a couple of frog experts first to see what they use. I ended up getting the Powell 735 MH and couldn't be happier. It is best for hollow body frogs, but can work with buzz frogs too. I stuck a Curado E7 on there which casts like a bullet with 50# braid. I think that I can cast that farther than my deep crank bait rod, which is a 7'11". I bought the rod at an end-of-year closeout at Bass Tackle Depot for $120 with free shipping.

I use a BPS PQ ($79) on a BPS Tourney special 7'6" H/F rod ($40 on sale)with 65# braid for hollow frogs
And a BPS PQ ($79) on a 7'3" MH/F Carrot Stix rod ($59 on clearance at Dicks) with 50# braid for buzz frogs.

Buy what you can afford and have fun fishing. Don't get all caught up in high dollar stuff for fun fishing.

Baitcaster is my recommendation, and most people will probably agree with me.

I agree!!

I was looking at getting pretty much the same setup as Bender has. Powell rod with a Curado E7 for the reel.

You'll want casting tackle for frog fishing, but for heavy line and baits. Comparatively long casts are part of frog fishing but all else being equal, spinning tackle beats casting for raw casting distance.

I agree that a H/F rod of decent quality will suffice for a largely visual strike technique. The Core is way more reel than you need. Something with a strong drag and decent casting is all you need. Revos are known for their strong drag. A discontinued Curado w/ Carbontex Drag upgrade is a good option as well.

I seconds that. Definitely go half and half. No reason to spend 300 on the reel a core when a cheaper reel will do you fine... especially if it means getting a good rod to go with it!
