Default Power Pro Vs. SpiderWire

Hey guys,
I used Spider Wire a few years ago and didnt like it that much. I kept getting birds nests in my baitcaster. Yall give Power Pro such huge praises that I want to try it out, but Im wondering if its anything like the Spiderwire?

birdsnests happen with braid when it digs in from misuse.powerpro digs in less than any other braid.pulling against a snag with a tight drag will cause digging.wrap the line around a dowel and pull.power pro is a great braid.braid does not handle like mono and requires adjustments by the user.

I concur LOL. You will get used to it digging into the spool after a little time, and realize you need to pull it out some before casting. But to me it's the easiet line to handle on a baitcaster, especially with no memory. It really only digs in on huge hooksets, snags and fighting those monsters

I never posted about spider wire, until now. I bought two 30lb. spools when it first came out. Anyone remember when that was? Anyway I spooled up with it last year. Now before I started with baitcasters I spooled a spinning reel with power pro even though i had those two old spools of spider wire. The reason I went with power pro on the spinning reel was because of this forum. And I liked it. But my encounter with the spider wire has been favorable to say the least. For me it casts fine, backlashes on parr with power pro. Well I just bought two more spools of 30lb test spider wire at Wally Worled for $3.50. I will see if I encounter any problems with the new stuff. I can't say anything bad about it because I haven't had any problems with it. But then again I really only used it for the past year.

I have used both as well. I would say that with either one of these lines, it's wise to use mono line as backing on the spool itself with comparable line size diameters (i.e. 12lb mono backing when using 50 lb powerpro, etc.). If I could only use one line and had the choice of these two to fish with, I would choose powerpro over spiderwire. I have enjoyed both lines more, however, since they've improved each since they first came out.

How's that for taking the middle road!

I use both of them. IMO, both work well, and SpiderWire Stealth is very quiet! If the PowerPro's noise doesn't bother you, They are both great!

I've gone back and forth on the braid issue. I've used Power pro and Spider wire braid, and will use both until I start having problems. I have not encountered any problems with the Spider wire braid.

The biggest difference is that spiderwire is flat where Powerpro is round, which makes a difference in the handling. the flat line digs into the spool more than the round line does. Even so, if you pull real tight on the line it will dig in regardless. I've learned to pull some line off and then wind it back on before the next cast to eliminate the 10 foot cast that occasionally happens

You nailed it Buddy. Couldnt have put it better myself. Power Pro is the way to go. I use to use P-Line Spectra and loved it just was noisy. All braids are nosiy. Being a custom rod builder I can assure you that some of the braids play hell on your guides. Spiderwire is one of them as well as Stren Super Braid and Gorilla all play hell on your Guides. I will report on the Power Pro afte somemore usage, but so far as best as I can tell due to PowerPro being round and the quality of the line it will be easy on the guides.

I bought two bad boxes of power pro in 30lb test 8lb dia. and it sucked the first fish i had on with the hookset it broke imidiatly, retied, next fish same thing, next fish same thing . I now use fireline (20lb test 8lb dia.) and so far it works alot better than the powerpro. It was my first time using it this morning and pulled two fish out that weighed more than two pounds and the line stayed as unbreakable as ever. I also noticed that it did not dig into the spool nearly as much as the powerpro and casting was flawless it doesn't backlash like powerpro iether.

I've heard that from several people about the 30 lb Powerpro. I use the 50-12 lb diameter-and never had a problem.

I have never had a problem with the 50lb test 12lb dia.thats why i still use it for pitching and fliping. I only use the 20lb test 8lb dia. fireline for spinnerbaits.

Thumbs up Fireline

I have been using Fireline on my spinning reels for a number of years now and have no complaints. This is a fused line. Tried braid for a while but got frustrated with the line constantly wrapping round the rod tip. Also tried the original Spiderwire fusion. That was rubbish. The line would start peeling after a few uses and broke easily. The Fireline wears with time and starts to look a bit frayed but this does not affect its performance. Never had any problems with damage to my rods guides either.

If you are using braid you can't go wrong with 50lb test or you will be prone to bird nests, it's also easy to undo in the higher diameter. I'm using spider wire now and the digs really get on my nerves. I'm going back to power pro as soon as it goes on sale but I'm also thinking about trying fireline.

I would recomend the fireline it almosts insists on not digging into the spool even after a big fight or getting stuck in a lillypad and the stuff just dont want to break!

I'll say it once ,I'll say it twice you can pull Jimmy Hoffa off the bottom of the lake with power pro.
Enough said there I think!

I heard somewhere a tip about taking a heavy lure, winging out your best cast, and then pulling off another 20 yds. of line, then putting a piece of tape across the spool. Anyone heard about this? Supposedly it prevents backlashes from cutting too deep.
