using clips

i have a fish and ski boat so there is not alot of room for rod storage. i usually take just 5 poles. one of my setups is for cranking. on this setup i usually use a little clip so that i can change between a crank, jerkbait, or spinnerbait without having to take extra poles. so far i havent seen where the clip has taken away from the presentation and was just wondering if anybody else does the same. i wrap line around the spinnerbait so that the clip wont slide down to one side.

I use them for cranks and jerkbaits, but that's about it. I clip them directly to the lure's eye rather than to the split ring. I've taken the nose split rings off of most of my jerkbaits.

I prefer to tie directly onto any lure, swivels only add one more piece of equipment between YOU and the FISH....don't get me wrong they are faster to change out, but there will be times when you lose a fish because your swivel popped open or better yet broke off. Also, people who use swivels seem to neglect to check their line for frays as frequently as those who don't use swivels.

Is it bad to use clips ?

Yes and no.

It´s bad if you don´t use good quality clips.

It´s bad if you use clips as an excuse to change baits without having to retie, if you are lazy enough not to retie then you are lazy enough not to check the condition of your line above the clip.

It´s bad if you clip the bait in the wrong place ( at the split ring )

It´s not bad if you use quality clips.

It´s not bad if you check on a regular basis the condition of your line above the clip.

It´s not bad if you clip the bait in the right place, many baits benefit of the use of clips, the get a more free wobble.

I like 'em, but I won't use them if I'm using soft baits, I think the bass see and get spooked and don't bite it. You can also use knot that take a long time to tie and is very strong and reliable. Tie it to the clip with a strong knot, and just clip from lure to lure, not having to tie the same knot over and over.

BTW-I don't use it with spinnerbaits unless it has an eye.

i use swivels alot.. but i check the line often..

but on my spinner baits i tie line across the bend..

like the pic.. so i can use a snap swivel

sometimes i use a swivel or clip if you want to call it that. if you have arthur in your hands it takes a toll on you retieing everytime you change lures. so i have some with a swivel on them so it is easier to change, mostly on my mono set ups that have cranks and such.

I use a snap clip on cranks and jerkbaits and I have never had any problems with them breaking. I also check my line often.

ive never used snaps or clips but if i were perch jeking id use'm.JK
personally i wouldnt have confidence in them but i like what raul said it all makes sense to me

I use a clip only for my crankbait setup. After some experimentation I've settled on a #3 snap clip. A #4 is way to big, and a #2 can be pulled open by a big Bass. For I tried them on Jerkbaits, but just didn't like the difference in the action, so I tie now.

I have always tied direct in the past, sometimes with a Rapala knot on crankbaits. I got some P-Line crosslock snaps and I think I will use them this year:

I was afraid of the speed clips, some guys I know use them though. I'm just afraid I won't be able to use any of these since I bite my fingernails and can't open them.
