Default Bait caster question?

What is the trick to casting a baitcaster over head? I don't have any problems when throw it side arm, but when I throw it over head I usuly get a birds nest.

HMMMM....gonna take some physicists for this one on the money, but... Tighten your spool down a little bit. You might be lobbing or something. An ole man taught me to stick wallet under my arm and hold it there during cast, and it helped build speed through my arm for casting instead of my shoulder. You could be using more force to push the bait side arm than you are overhead and causing the spool to spin faster than the lure is traveling. Just my .02 brother.

I do better by turning my rod so my reel faces the sky while casting over head. Dont know where I picked it up at but it sure works for me

like bubba said just tighten your spool down. I probably wont be able to give ya much advice but what will probably help you is just practice casting with your spool tightened. You will get the hang of it.

i find it easier to cast side arm too....but i dont bird`nest when throwing it overhead.... just tighten it down at first or use more thumb..... it must be something with the physics..... hope you figure it out

As the other said, tighten the magnetics, could be you physics.etc, I agree.

I had the same problem, the only way I fixed it was to practice, not only did I figure out how to do it right (I let go later and when the rod is a 100* angle) I could undo a backlash faster than y'all baitcasting vets, and that was before I learned Kevin's trick! I could undo a bad birds nest in 2 min or less! Any one up for a competition?!

btw if you don't want to wast your good line practicing casting over hand and getting out bird nests, you could put a rubber band over the good line and than put on some cheep line. When you cast, the rubber band will stop the good line from line going out wile the bad line get entangled........ you get casting practice without wasting good line.

Hope you get it figured out!

That's great advise Bubba! Try using less force!

I figured out also that you never really have to whip it as hard as you can. A little technique goes a long way.

Never tried an overhand cast. 3/4 over head works great with no increase in birdnests.

Default baitcster tip

A friend with alot more experience than myself (he's been using one since he was 5 , and is now retired ) told me to make a good cast as far as you can . Then put a piece of tape on the spool and reel it back in . Practice with it set up like this , then if you make a mistake , it will only backlash to the tape . It's easy to pick out , and saves your line .

I've always subscribed to the theory that over casting is just like over swinging a golf club or a baseball bat. The end result isn't usually what one visualized. A controlled cast working on accuracy will get you the desired results more often, and with less expended energy.

As I said early, 3/4 arm cast is way better then straight over head.

That's what it was, tape, not a rubber band!

My bad
