Default Cheap and redneck roots

Those two things lead to some creative engineering.

My son couldn't wait for me to get home today and decided to add line to his new reel. (Which is a good thing in ways)
Well, he added the wrong line. (4 lbs test on his BPS reel) and over filled it. I was just going to strip it all off and start over, but I am a little too cheap to just throw away brand new line. I was looking through the garage and came up with this plan.

I took a 1/4 inch wooden dowel and cut it down about 10 inches in length. I then put it into my cordless drill, taped the end of th eline to dowel, hit the spool release and away I went. I was able to adjust where the line went onto the dowel and salvage the line.

I have several 1/4 inch bushings from my table saw that I had replaced this spring. I drilled a hole to match the diameter of the bushing in a 2X4 and was able to hold the dowel straight, but all easily transfer the line onto the spinning reel for which it had been intended.

I don't know how often I will attempt to transfer line, but the dowel worked well to remove it.

I once just hit the release on a reel and ran the line threw the other pole to the reel and did it that way.

I have done that as well, but in this case I needed to strip the line off of the rod intended for the 4lbs test. I was looking for a way to hold the line for a while to get my son up and running.

A cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels fits perfectly over the chuck on a cordless drill also.
I have used this lots of times for removing line from a reel.

For no other reason then to see if I could, I used the technique to strip the braid off of my frogging rod, then put it on another dowel and then back on the reel. For me, it worked better then my old technique of looping it on the floor when I reversed it.

Cass, hang on to your line spools when you empty them. You can use them to recycle the line.

I use a drill to wind it back on the spool. Take a long bolt you can thread a wingnut on. Thread it on with the wings pointing at the head of the bolt, opposite the way you normally use a wingnut. Put the bolt through the hole in the spool, insert it into the drill chuck and tighten it up. Hold the spool in place by tightening the windnut. Works like a charm.

I had tried that Reb, but wasn't able to get the line on as smooth as the long dowel. Maybe I just need to practice.
