Has Berkeley Lost It???

I've always liked Berkeley Power Worms. Haven't fished them a ton this year, just really trying other techniques, with other t-rig baits, etc.

So yesterday I hook up the ol Power worm t-rigged. Hook a fish, worm is junk. Keep fishing, miss a bite, worm is junk.... I probably went through 4-6 worms yesterday only catching 2 fish.

The worms were brand new, bought about 2 months ago, but haven't been opened. It seems like the worms are really skinny and the hooksets are really opening up the worm.

Anyone else have similar problems with Power Worms?

What is your favorite type of worm to t-rig?

I like the Culprit 7.5" for worm fishing.

I've never had a problem with Power Worms. They're by far my favorite worm and probably 80% of the worms are Power Worms.

If it's only one, maybe two bags bought at the same time it may just be a bad batch

What hook and line are you using? If you are using a heavy hook or braid that may be your problem because both will tear plastic baits up pretty bad.

Power worms like all others have different models so to speak some thicker than others,I always used a light wire hook with them but got away using senkos nowdays mostly or zoom if wanting a normal worm.

That's a good point. If you've changed anything up recently, that may also be the cause of the problems.

I am using a braid, with BPS EWG worm hooks.

Maybe I'm just ripping the worms apart myself. They just feel really brittle.

they arent as durable as a regular worm. never have been.im about to quit buying rage craws too. seems the more expensive the plastic, the less durable. they know what theyre doing...

I am sure that this is at least part of your problem. Braid tears up more baits for me than anything else. Also if you are using a heavy wire hook that will do a number on them as well.

Personally I have never noticed Power Worms being less durable than other companies, but I never really paid much attention either. I just keep buying them because the fish keep eating them. I love the Rage Tail Craws but I agree they do get torn easy, but again if the fish keep eating them I will keep buying them.

I have also noticed a degradation in recent power worms. I believe they changed the formula. It is a very noticeable difference to me, and I am talking about a pretty large sample qty, I've noticed this in about a dozen packs from several different retailers, meaning around 36 pkgs. of them. My older power worms (6 mos or so) were more durable. The plastic in the newer ones seems to be more 'grainy' or coarse. Same stuff on my rods, hooks and line-so that is not the differenc, but I am definitely noticing a less durable worm from Berkley as of late.

A friend pointed out that the newer worms smell stronger than the older ones as well, the packing for the worms is the same, but again this detail makes me think they changed the formula somehow.

Personally, if the fish are biting them then they are worth the price to put another one on. I use the pumpkinseed as well as the black ones religously and have noticed some wear and tear myself but I keep literally 2 bags of pumpkinseed and one bag of black as well as other colors on me at all times. That way, when a fish bites it in half I can throw another one on and go for it again!

i agree altho i prefer the 10" worm, never used berkley power worms, id just try a different brand

Seems to me the Culprits are smaller in thickness too.

Still looking for my favorite worm... I've had good luck with culprit, yum ribon tail, and yum 10" big show shortened and melted to 8 inches. Hope to get some Mann's Jelly worms pretty soon, REALLY wanna try em.

Ain't caught much on a power worm... very popular worm, and smell great.. they just don't seem to produce for me.

I think there is a strong likelihood that the additives many manufacturers add these days (scents, salt impregnated, coffee,etc.) make a difference in durability. The question of whether the trade-off is worth it is for each guy to answer for himself.

I think that is spot on brother!

They are very Bio-degradable now.. more so than before.

I think concerns over ingested worms may have pushed the change.

Careful you actually use them to fish with... they are appetizing.

Depends on conditions. Spin gear water vis not bad robo straight tail worm or Reaction Innovation flirt worm. Cast gear maybe more windy want more weight to feel worm on bottom will go with a Zoom mag worm or a Aquaglow scalloped tail worm. Also like this setup with lakes running bigger fish.
