lure changing??

hey guys i mainly shore fish and always carry a heavy tackle box filled with a mixture of lures. i have my go to lure (wacky worm) but i switch lures often. i normally use a snap swivel at the end of my line so i can switch out lures or hooks real quick. though i've caught plenty of fish this way, i've noticed recently while site fishing that the bass will not go for my lure. i felt that this female can see my swivel or line which deterred her from biting. my question is do you guys use snap swivels like myself or do you cut & retie when switching out lures?

I know a lot of guys use snaps, especially with crankbaits. I personally do not use them. I feel like they can cause you not to retie as often as you should which can lead to break offs. I also just don't like the way it looks in front of a bait. It makes me feel lazy and makes me lose confidence in the bait I'm throwing because of how it looks with the snap. I realize that's mostly all in my head but it's enough to make me not use them. If you are going to use snaps, make sure you use a high quality one.

It depends on what I'm using. Soft plastics and jigs I always tie direct. Same for spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. Crankbaits and most topwaters I use a plain snap, no swivel. I used to worry about a snap being too much hardware, but take a look at the success these guys are having with the A Rig, and see how much hardware is involved in that!

The only time I use snaps is on crankbaits, and then I only use Duo-Lock swivels. This is mainly because I switch crankbaits often when I'm fishing them.

I don't use then when I'm connecting a hook. They can catch on weeds and change the action the lure has when on a hook.

ok. i'll keep my snap swivel since it wouldnt be practical for me to cut & retie every time i decide to change lures. not to mention a waste of line. good point on the umbrella rig too

Snaps for hardbaits only. Soft plastics and spinnerbaits are always tied directly.

I use Norman speed clips.
I too shore fish and retying gets old when your carrying two or three rods only.
Larger cranks sometimes the swivels work better due to the tie eye on lure can be thick or larger inhibiting the cranks action on a smaller clip.
Bedding bass are really cautious to start. My hunch is that if you threw a wacky worm with a direct tie you'd of gotten the same reaction. I've seen guys spend an hour on one bed and still got nothing.

Hate snap swivels, hate em, hate em, hate em.

They're especial awful for slow presentations like wacky rigs, jigs, texas rigs, drop shots, shaky heads, and Carolina rigs. The only time I find them somewhat useful is for crankbaits, and topwaters. But still, I think that retying is always better, it lets you get them first couple inches of the line from that lure that's always taking the brunt of the fishing and gets abraded.

how do you like the norman speed clips? are they overall strong? they look small enough to almost blend in with the bait

Been using them for awhile.
Great on cranks and invaluable when it's cold and windy.
Don't use them alot on jigs or plastics.
I believe they have two sizes, the larger being hard to find.
Unless lure eye is real thick or large, like on most jigs, thier great.
Never lost a lure but have had pike mess up a dew clips.
Lipless cranks work better, more action, than direct tie.

They originated for Ice fisherman I believe, hence the smaller size. Like I mentioned, I think they have one for larger lures. Cabelas at one time had two sizes.

Oh I also use them frogging due to I use tieable wire leader (for pike) and retieing the leader when I have to switch to the pink one for bridge fishing

can stink to do on the water. Again thier loop in the clip allows the frog freer movement and walking the frog works better.
Give them a try.
If a fish can tell your using a Norman Clip from sight it'll be unusual and they could probably see a split ring as easy.

By the way, I just read KVD's latest book. He uses snaps! Says he's never had one fail. But he saves them for crankbaits and certain topwaters.
