First of all, i always trim my skirts back to just behind the hook. It gives the trailer I use more profile etc.. Shows the action of the trailer. I use my aunt zippy from MMiB ( http://www.mymomisbecky.com ) as a trailer. I also trim my weedguard back a bit too... so when you brush it the hook is JUST protected, but the slighted pressure will hook up. Granted this leads to more snags, but it helps my hook up percentage immeasurably. Favorite jig colors for me are green pumpkin, and black and blue. |

The only modification you need to do is sharpen the hook once they aren't sticky sharp.Don't mess with altering the jig, tie it on 50 lb braidand install a trailer on it & your favorite scent.Your all set to fish, no other modifications needed. P N J |

I too trim the skirt. But just because I have always been a believer in "the shorter the skirt, the better" WAR

most times you want the jig to fall straight down after you cast. so its a little tough sometimes, but cast out, and just as the jig enters the water, take the rod from 2 o clock to like 10 o clock, and then slack it back down to allow 6-8 feet of line to let the jig fall.. really hard to explain, easier to show . you want a gentle insertion int he water too... I dont swim a jig, so I bounce it on stumps, the bottom etc.. i use water rocker if i want a swim jig. |

for a beginner or a seasoned pro i highly recomend the "pitching to heavy hitters" dvd that van dam put out thru bps.. he really does not try to sell you any thing but goes deep in details on jigs, reel set up,rod secletion.. it is one of a few i realy like a bunch of info with out trying to sell me any thing.. belive it or not the places i have been catching bass on a pnj are not places i normally fish a worm-some one gave me this advice once- i have yet to catch a bass off a dock with one. i have yet to catch a bass while the bait was"on the fall"... every one was taking dragging the jig along in full contact of the bottom.. every once and a while i had to "pop" the rod tip to free the jig from a rock but never had a bite doing it.. jig fishing is an art forum and i have been finger painting for the last 3 years.. zooker

I used to fish a jig more than I do now adays, but back then I trimmed the skirt and weed guard, however I like tubes alot better on the waters I fish now... If theres heavy trashy cover tho, nothing is better than a pnj |
