Uh, YES!! Because if you broke off once or twice that would be the end of your fishing with that reel for that trip, and suppose it was the only line size working that day. Even if you had more on board, you'd have to respool (possibly in a panic if you just broke off on a fish).

I still see no need when only 100 yds at most will be used. Thats what's nice about backing and using only a little bit of line. When you do break off, you only have to spool a little; you can get 5-6 spools-worth from one filler spool.
