				 | Big motor on a Small boat

Is it illegal to put a bigger motor on your boat than the max hp calls for the boat.

I'm not sure if it's illegal but it might not be all that safe depending on how big the motor is compared to the boats suggested hp . Jim

it is here pal. check your local states law on motors. also check your insurance companies policy. they may not cover anything at all if you do that.

I think I am technically overpowered myself, sometimes you can fudge a little. Get a different cowling, HP numbers, ect. I have never been bothered by the wardens about my 28 (which is really 30 from what I've heard) on a 14', and my father has 25hp on a 13' - I know that is overpowered.

Yeah, Im not talking about a couple of hp. Im talkin g about a 70hp motor to a 150hp motor on a 16' fiberglass boat. I was hopeing to get where i was going alot faster. LOL.

a 150 would sink the rear of a 16 foot glass boat.. a 90 would kick on a 16 footer. actually some are rated for a 90.. old moters -pre 95- are actually over rated for todays boats. jumping from an old 70 to a new 90 is a BIG differance.. zooker
