				 | Spawn Question

Hi all, quick question about where to find females. Here is the situation. For the last week have been catching tons of small males and a couple of bigger ones as well along spawning banks, haven't caught a female in nearly two weeks now and the males just really started making the beds over this last weekend. Where, and how would you go about finding the females and catching them? I have been seeing some suspended fish off the points but if they are bass haven't been able to get them to bite. Any suggestions? Thanks, Basstech.

Since the males have just started making beds, you are in a pre-spawn situation. I prefer to go with something big and slow moving when that happens. I will throw a large jerk bait towards the suspending females. I have had a lot of success with large fly rigged flukes. Letting them flutter down and twitching them. I usually try to trigger a reaction bite by bringing it right across their faces. If that does not work, I will drop shot in the general area of them. I always cast past them and ease the bait into their area. Once they start moving closer to the beds, I will switch to something t-rigged and focus on first drop off from the beds.

In this situation I find that I usually can catch females that are staged in a little deeper water, usually in the same perpendicular line as the males (as related to the bank). I have good luck whit a DT-10 cranked super slow in 8 to 12 feet, or with a football jig and craw trailer. In my area there are tuns of crayfish. If that doesn't work, just stay on the males and the females will be there in a week or two.

yep, size, fishing local tournaments with a freind, we've done ok, haven't won any cash and I've gotten us on fish pretty consistantly so we've been finishing in the top 25% until the evening tourneys started. Been catching nothing but shorts untill last sunday, I had four keepers (15"), biggest being about 3.5 lbs. but every single one of them was a male (including all the shorts) and I get tired of going through a bag-o-plastics for dinks. The guys we fish against have been fishing this lake and these tourneys for 20 years(most of them), so if you haven't gotten caught a limit chances are you're not winning. Plus I've never done good with catching staging females and I am really tired of that.

Who remembers the link to that spawning article? Lots of good info in there. According to the article, the female is roughly 20' away in deeper water, and apparently, the male is generaly lookin right at her

I never really sight fish in the spring even if I see them on the beds. I fish the banks but around 6 to 8 feet down and catch good quality fish. Maybe the females are watching the males to see how good they are at house keeping.
