Cranking Stick

Hey guys sorry if there is a thread already about this but I couldn't find one.

I have a friend who gave me a casting rod 7'medium light cranking stick with a x fast tip.

What should I use this for?
I've never used a casting rod with less than medium action.

Man that sounds like a finessing/drop shotting monster!
Any kind of ''shaking'' technique would be good with this as well.Like topwater lures

If you mount a finesse type baitcaster on it. You would have a killer rig for light crankbaits.

It wont do too good for much other than that, well, and top waters and jerkbaits.

But for sure not a plastics rod. The BPS crankin stick is a fiberglass grapgit composite material, and is not made for the extreme sensitivity necessary (at least for me) for fishing plastics.

Personally, I don't understand why BPS would make a designated cranking rod with an XF power. Maybe it's because they made it a ML power, maybe they just don't care, or maybe they just don't know what the hell their doing (and I'm fairly confident they do however).

Either way, if this was was 6-9" shorter, I'd make it a short range, accurate crankbait rod. I've noticed KVD fished with a shorter crankbait rod around docks and such where accuracy is much more important than distance. However, I wouldn't suggest taking a saw (or car window, ceiling fan, etc) to the rod.

At 7' ML XF, I think it would make a decent finesse rod if it is sensitive enough, which I doubt being a glass (or maybe composite, I really don't know which) crankbait rod.

Anyways, I guess it would make a good shallow crankbait rod if nothing else. However, this rod wouldn't be my first choice for normal cranking, short range accurate cranking, or finesse fishing. But seeing as any rod is better than no rod (in most cases), I'd make it a crankbait rod. Paired with a slow to normal retrieve reel, it should make a decent shallow crankbait rod. But at ML, I wouldn't attempt any deep cranking with it.

Thanks for all the input guys. I have been using the rod pond fishing cause it is fun to fight the fish on such a light rod. As far as casting goes I consider myself to be fairly accurate but I can't cast this thing worth a crap. Thats why I decided just to use it in ponds. But don't want to be wasting it if there is something it would be good for as far as fishing the local lakes.

Casting a crankbait rod, or any rod with a ML/L power or M/MS/S action is something that takes a lot of getting used to. There definately is a different technique to it than a heavier power/faster action rod.

I have a 7' ML fast Crankin Stick and I like it for light baits. I've done good with Bandit 200 and 300s and it throws 1/4-1/2 oz. traps well. My rod says that it is graphite and doesn't say anything about composite, that's why I got a ML not a M. It did take some getting used to but now I like it.

I would use it for light balsa jerkbaits and topwaters, like Skitter Pops or Rapala floaters.

I have several soft plastic set ups already so I think ill make it my designated jerkbait rod. I've never done much jerkbait fishing, it is going to be part of my 2010 arsenal. I can also tie on a light crankbait when needed, like strike king 1s and 3s.
Only top water fishing I really do is zara spooks and spro frogs. I do throw a buzz from time to time. I think these need a little heavier action.

I've always found it easier to work a jerkbait with a shorter rod: 6'3".
