Worm Question

I am planning to go fishing a couple more times before the year is over, and i just have a quick question.

What pound of line would you use (mono) for fishing a smaller plastic worm with a 1/8 oz. bullet sinker? Also, could you texas rig a nightcrawler on a ewg hook? Thanks

Yeah you could rig a nightcrawler up that way. I would try fishing a heavier weight this time of the year because you want your bait on the bottom. FInd brush. I use 15lb line in clear water and it still get's plenty of fish. If your cover is sparse I would go with 10pound but mainly this time of the year you have fish deep on brush on points and you want a strong line for this or you got fish on windy banks. With a light line under 12lb you get more stretch which isn't good. You might get more bites but you will miss more. If you got big fish can possibly break them off. I would recommend flourocarbon if you want to have a invisible line that is heavier. 15lb works for me and I really haven't noticed that much of a difference. I just don't lose as many. I would fish a 1/4 once weight at least. The heavier the weight the less sensitivity you will have so you will have to be focused. I fished a t rig today out in 15 feet off a point and it payed off with some nice ones. I would crawl it out through brush and they would take off with it pretty good. THe shallow bite probably is not as good so I would head deeper on points.

I would have to disagree with Fishie.You have to let the fish tell you what they want.This time of year the fish suspend and if so a bottom presentation will get little results.I have never fished a worm with weight over a 1/8 oz. usually a 1/16 oz. or a #5 splitshot on 8-10 lb test line.I also wouldn't rule a weightless rig out either.Notice where the lure was when the fish tapped it, if it was on bottom, then as fishie said, fish on bottom, but alot of my fish this year came on a weightless 5" Yamamoto cuttail worm in smoke color.Nearly every time it was hit on the fall.You have to go fish with an open mind and let the fish tell you what they want.P N J

Yeah what Png said. I use dropshots when I think the fish are off of cover or suspended more and on sunny days like yesterday I will do what I said above. I read a tip from Denny Brauer one time that said fish in the winter are more on the bottom that he targets because the suspending fish are too hard to catch usually. On partly cloudy to cloudy days a d shot works better for me anyhow and on coldfronts with blue skies its best to throw a t rig into the brush. I would recommend fishing deeper points now.

2nd question:why would you do that?i guess not?
