graphite rods

could someone please explain to me the im rating on graphite rods? i know the higher the # the higher the price tag, but i dont know what that gets me. better sensitivity, i would guess, but i have seen 30.00 rods w/ im6 and 70.00 rods w/ im6. i know quality is what you pay for, how well its made- but is one im blank the same as another?

The im rating is the amount of prssure they put the graphite under and the amount of graphite. Its actually a twofold meaning. When buying a rod the more is better to an extent but at the same time it also means the rod must be better taken care of. Higher end rods tend to be more suseptablie to breakage if not handled properly like slamming a lid on them or whatever. Most rod companies have over come this buy adding some type of material to help the rod to be not so brittle. A rod if made of pure grahite material would snap easily. Thats why they add another material.

Heard on Bill Dance today. The higher number the IM the lighter and stronger the graphite.

but im rating is not everything.higher im is more brittle and thus takes different resins and processes to make a rod that doesn't snap like a twig.there are some excellent rods that use no higher than im8 graphite.there are garbage rods that use 56 million modulous graphite and higher.

Very true DODGE. I have a couple of rods that are made by Shakespere. Both are IM7 rods but whatever they used along with the graphite has made them a pretty damn good rod. They have good guides and decent actions. I bought them to use in the worst of conditions so as not to chance breaking one of my higher end rods. One is a Intrepid and dont recall the other. Due to there makeup they are pretty much a broomstick that I use when I gotta get deep into the jungle.

i had a shakespear catera and it was real lite and sensative but it was real brittal and i snapped it while i was on a snag
