i had a freak occurance this morning about 5:20 am i hang a 3 pound bass on a frog-lovin the frog- set the hook. hauled him out of the weeds he come up and jumped then about 2 feet more he turned belly up and was stone dead by the time i got him in my boat.. the 4/0 ewg gammy was up thru the top of his mouth sticking out between his eyes..i cut the hook and removed it. i then put him in the live well-i figured him playin possum-with some rejuvinate let the areator run for 3 hours. i checked the fish just after i loaded the boat he was stone dead..i have never had a fish do this before. i guess the hook went thru his brain or some thing.. what do you guys think??? it is not very often a bass will suprise me on what they will or wont do. this was definatly something differant fer sure.specially seeing it was a very livly and apearing to be healthy bass.. zooker

That would be my guess-hook through the brain. I've never heard of that happening, either.

I did it once. Hooked a little smallie on the outside of the head. It was dead as soon as I set the hook...no fight, I just pulled it in and it was dead as Billy Idol's career.

the brain is a pretty decent ways behind the eye and its protected by bone..so I dunno if you could really hook a fish through the brain and have the hook point exposed. Could have been an old fish or just had too much shock..heck..who knows.

Have had fish die from the being hooked. I figured it was due to the hook getting into the brain. This fish was small (1 1/2 lb). But it rolled over as soon as I put the fish back (this was immediately) after catching the fish.

Circa too long ago, fishing one of these at Lake McQueeney TX, a small bass, no more than 13" long, attacked so violently that he drove the hook into his skull, from left to right, killing himself instantly. Too sad. http://www.normanlures.com/nlstore/i...lkerSeries.jpg Have no idea where that lure went to. You might check the dumpster. FlyRod |

I believe that bass are somewhat like the rest of us "life forms" with certain physical and mental attibutes that make up each individual, in this case, I would venture to say the fish might have died from a stress related heart attack maybe???.... Oh Hell, I guess maybe the hook did hit the brian, who knows?? Bummer anyway for sure. |

The one that I killed was in about a foot of water, heavy current. I don't see how it could have been a swim bladder, and considering that fish will still wiggle after you've stuck a knife in it...it would have to be an incredible heart attack. No, considering that in the case of the fish I killed the hook penetrated directly above and behind the eye, I must think that I just so happened to hit the brain or some very important part of the nervous system going to the brain.

Simple when that fish seen your ugly mug it went into shock and died of a heart attack. Heck I'm so ugly I can kill a squirrel just by lookin at em. My wifes even uglier than that not only can she kill a squirrel by lookin at em' she tears em up so bad there's nothin left to eat. Be my guess you hit it's brain or nervous system. I set the hook on a smallmouth with a jig that penetrated through the top of it's head and killed it. Me and my buddy couldn't hardly believe it. Kinda bummed me out it was a 2.5 lb. smallie during a tourney. Cost me 8 oz. penalty at weigh-in. So you better believe I ate that sucker. |
