Need to buy a new battery for my new transome mounted trolling moter. It's a Motor Guide 54 pound thrust for my 12 foot john boat. Has anyone had experience with either a Walmart Everstart battery or an Interstate deep cycle battery, and if so which of the two would you recommend? I usually fish about 7 hours at a time per day, moving often from spot to spot and using the motor to control the boat in the wind. This is my first post here. I'm looking foreward to sharing ideas with ya all.

Welcome to the forum!
Everstarts do the job quite well for me.-I've got 2 deep cycle(24 volt TM) and one cranking battery. One of the biggest reasons is no matter where I fish there is a WalMart close by, and a 24-hour WalMart makes it real easy to exchange a battery at 4:30 AM. Whichever you decide on, be sure to get a charger that has a deep cycle setting on it, and as soon as you get back from the lake put it on the charger. If you don't and charge it up before you head out the battery can take a set and not hold a full charge as well as shortening the battery life.

Hi, I run a Jon Boat club, and we all use electric motors only. Just about the entire club uses Wal-mart batteries because they are good.
I've got the same motor (well, pretty much, I think mine is 52# though), so be sure to get the yellow one, group 29, it'll last much longer. I only carry two batteries, a smaller group 27 for the front Motorguide, and the yellow one for the back, no problems during an 8 hour tournament with no other way to get around than trolling |

Sounds like Everstart is the way to go. They are definately more affordable. Have a question for ya Rebb. About the exchange of a battery from Walmart. I've heard a litle bit about it but am not exactly sure what the deal is on that. Why would you be exchanging batteries?

They use it as a core, to get the lead out, I suppose. If you don't have a battery to exchange, they charge you something like $7 more, and give you a receipt to get your money back if you bring another battery in.

Keith, like your car battery sometimes they go bad-no battery will last forever. If that happens it is usually at the worst possible time. I discovered my cranking battery was not holding a charge the night before an early start to the lake. Stopped at a 24 hour WalMart at around 4:30 AM and 15 minutes later I was on the way to the lake with a new battery. If you exchange it within the replacement period-usually 1-2 years-they will exchange it free and if it is beyond the replacement period it is pro rated.

oops, misread that, thought you were talking about the core charge
![]() Wal-Mart batteries even have a little pocket to put the receipt, to make the exchange process faster ![]() |
