What size line?

When you guys use topwaters such as popper, zara spook, chug bug etc...
Do you use lighter line or heavier line?

It's not so much the line as it is what I throw it on. 99.9% of the time I'm throwing it on a baitcaster, so I use 12 lb mono. All my spinning reels are spooled with 8 lb mono, so on those extremely rare occasions I throw it on a spinning reel it is on 8 lb mono.

The exception is a frog. Those I throw on 50 lb Powerpro braid, which has a 12 lb mono diameter. I also use a heavy action rod for those particular baits.

Ok thanks, i was asking because i have two baitcasters one with 12 pound test and the other 25 and was just deciding which one to throw it on.

depends where I'm throwing. its best to use the smallest line you can get away with. of course you're not gonna be using 8lbs mono fishing the jungle around here. now if I was in open water, then yeah, I'd consider 8lbs mono.

for top water i use 5o lb. braid or 20 lb. mono.

When fishing topwater baits in open water I don't want to lose a $20 RICO to a small fish

so I go with a little heavier mono line - 14 to 20lb class with low stretch.

I use 30-50lb braid with toads in grass. This line has the ability to cut through the grass and I'm able to get them up and out of heavy cover.

50 LB Powerpro it floats, so makes working the bait easier IMO. Plus it's already on the rod LOL.

!2 lb and up depending on weight of the bait, 12lb for poppers, 14 for small spooks, 17lb for buzbaits/large spooks, 50lb braid for frogs.

Reason for heavier mono on the other dos is simple, the heavier the mono the more buoyant it is, Giving the bait better action, and easier to work.
