I am a huge catch and release person, and I have never caught a bass bigger than 4 lbs up here in northern indiana, my question is what would you guys do if you caught a 8 pounder or over. I dont know what I would do, I know I would be pumped if I did catch afish that big but I dont know what I would do.

take multiple pics of the fish from multiple angles, measure the girth and length, and get a fiberglass mount...the taxidermist should be able to go by the measurements and pics...

Thats what I would do, because, he could live on, and you have something other than pics to remeber him by.

11 pounds or better and I'm getting a skin mount. The people who say that fiberglass mounts are better are just plain lying fwiw, the detail is much better when its the real thing (done right).
I think the C&R people mean well, but C&R doesnt always make sense. An 11 or 12 pound bass normally wont live all that much longer. Sooner or later that big fish is going to rot to nobody's benifit. A 12 pound bass has already done its part to better the genetic base of the population. That 1 or 2 years that you may give to that bass by releasing it arent going to make as big of a difference as people claim. Just don't start keeping 8-12 pounders left and right, should you be so lucky to catch them. But a once and a lfietime fish is just fine to keep and get a true skin mount.

I agree in a way, you caught one that I woulda kept...
I think that guy who cpred the 25 lb fish should have kept it, because it will eat all of the 3lb fish or smaller in that area, and won't live much longer. I tell you that sucker would have been on my mantle. |

skin mount for all the reason's posted above. plus a fiberglass fish cost TWICE as much to mount. just roll them in a wet towel or wet newspaper and freeze. or even better freeze them completely in a bucket of water if possible.trust me my brother is a taxidermist #1 thing they complain about with fish is freezer burned fins. -which are a pain in the butt to fix- a added note if mounting a fish tell your taxidermist ya want the "wet look" on the fish this may cost a bit more but well worth the $$ it basicly is a heavy clear coat finish that makes the fish look like it was when caught -ya know fish slime- i am looking for a 10+pounder in the largemouth catagory...

I've never mounted a bass. I tried once and slipped off due to the slime. Really!

The thing is in my area an 8lber is very very rare. Up here that is a once in a life time fish, at least in the lakes that I fish in.

Skin mount... I always thought they look more realistic. Cheaper too. Hell, one fish is not that big of a deal, and it will be something you always remember. not like it is being wasted.
