Hook Keeper

Do you use the hook keeper on your rod when your finished with a bait? I've seen people use their reels instead. I'm always worried about damaging my reel.

Always. If it doesn't have one I add one. Keeps the business end out of the way.

Its way better to use a hook keeper. In a bind I've used the reel or stuck the hook in the cork foregrip, but its just way easier overall to make a keeper out of a little wire and use that.

Always, I use to use my guides, but that will ruin guides real fast. I try not uto buy rods w/out hook keppers, but sometimes I still do, and then I put one on.

I've always used the top of my baitcasters to place the hook/crankbait/etc..and yes, it does scratch the paint a tad, just personnel perference, then I wrap the line around the rod a couple of times to avoid mulitiple rods from interweaving among themselves..it still happens tho rofl

What do you use to make your keepers and how do you attach it to the rod? I have seen some suggestions, but I was wondering what you guys used.

I love using my keepers but sometimes I get rods without them due to the price, so I just put the hooks on the FRAME of the guide not the actual guide/insert since it will tear up the finish on it and will cause nicks on your line.

Try a bent paperclip cut to the right shape, then wrap it on with braided line. Coat it good with epoxy and your set.

I always use the bottom crossbar of the reel next to the handle. This keeps the hook out of the way, so it does not get snagged on anything. Then I wrap the line around the rod as JB suggested. I use this method when I am going to put the rods in a sleeve to store them in my rod locker.
I also drill a 1/8 inch hole in the trigger of the rod handle on bait casting rods. I am able to put the hook in this hole in the trigger when I am just laying the rod on the boat deck so it is quick to grab when I want to change to a different rod and lure in a hurry.

Only use those on a cork rod handle, as with other materials, I've had those typecut off part of the handle.

Im a sinner - I use the guides, but I cant say Ive ever had a real problem because of it.
