both! if ya put out a crankbait you'll have to crank real slow, and if its the jerkbait count to about 8 between twitches, if ya can stand the wait lol

When I used to fish iceouts, the weightless fluke was the best bass catcher for me, sometimes just deadsticking it was what was needed. Lizards

I use soft plastic trout worms wacky rigged with a few split shots. These have worked wonders for me over the past few years.

remember rip-rap rocks hold heat, so that will probably uncover first, so i'd fish it with a shakey worm.

Favorite ice out bait for me hands down is the Smithwick Rattlin Rogue in the 4 1/2 inch size. Black back, gold sides and orange belly. They call it the bream color, but it don't look like a bream to me. But it works great here in NW Indiana. I work it around shallow weedbeds and brush near deeper water. Especially early in the day when the water is calm. I work it like a surface bait really. Cast it out and let it sit a few seconds. Then give it a jerk, jerk and pause retrieve. Some days a long pause between jerks works best and other days little pause at all will work better. Just experiment. The bass I am holding here was caught this way just days after ice out.

i caught a lot of big bass, released all of them, during ice-out.. my best lure is SLUG-O..i try to target SMALLMOUTH not largemouth now..this means CURRENT, STREAMS ETC.. remember, bigger is way to go at this time on your lures, no small bait fish are born yet.. |

I have been having great success with a 3" Brewer's Grub on a 1/16 oz. open jig head fished SLOOOOOOW and steady at various depths. Work the deeper water adjacent to shallow flats if possible. Great winter tactic. Here is a chunky 3lb'er I caught at lunchtime just yesterday. 65% of ponds is still ice covered....
