Well from my experiance that im going through at the present moment.I would check the compression on the motor for sure. But the best advice i can give is take it to a qualified outboard mechanic and have them over look it

Almars in Delaware no tax and a one year warrenty.. Great prices installed.. Your in Jersey so Del is just a short drive away. Do not mess around with somebodys old motor get a good one and make that Gambler fly like it should. I have owned two Gamblers and I loved them. Capt Mike

DITTO on the compression check for sure plus actually seeing it run be it on a stand or preferably on a boat. A leakdown test is also very valuable. Ole Cap'n Mike done gave you some good sound advise and knowing him he wouldnt steer you wrong.
