I most the time stick with rapalas and XPS jerk baits. They both work fine, but the rapalas are my 2-cents. If I want a suspender I use a rapala, the XPS ones sink slow.

x-rap,lucky craft and rouges.. like any crankbait a jerk bait is a place/time/color/cadence bait.. every bait works differantly.. the lucky craft is between the other two.. the x-rap you can work extremely fast and slowly sinks.. the rouge you are forced to work much slower and they float. i use the 128 lucky craft which almost perfectly suspends.. there is no wrong answer.. zooker

I like the Rouges. I have a few old Bagleys left, too thst I will throw every now and then. I have 1 Lucky Craft but Momma doesn't give me enough allowance for them on a regular basis. I have caught 2 things on the LC though, a gar & a 5' gator. Gator put up a heck of a fight, but I have lost confidence in it.

My preference is #6 XRaps when I want a smaller jerkbait. Once the fish get more active due to a rise in water temps, I go with #8 XRaps and Husky Jerks that have tighter a wiggle. I only use Jerkbaits in clear water. For colors I keep it pretty simple. Rainbow Trout, Perch, and Fire Tiger. I have one #8 XRap in Clown that I've never caught a damn thing on. Never even got a nibble.

Ito Vision 110, IMA flit, LC Pointer 100s, River2Sea, Jackall Squad Minnows and Squirrels, suspending and floating Rogues, X-Raps, deep X-Raps, X-Calibers, etc..... I guess I have a lot of jerkbaits, but it's probably my go to lure. I throw the Pointer 100s and Squad Minnows the most, but 2 of my biggest bass last year came on X-Rap deeps. I like the Limited Rogues in 5 1/2" too. |

I started using the rattling rogue about as soon as they came out with it, and almost always have one tied on...but dont fish it nearly as long of a time period per outing than I used to.. back in "the day" I'd throw it all march or april at ky lake or up here...I look back now and can see I was fishing way to fast, looking for aggressive fish, instead of waiting the 6 or 8 seconds between jerks...back then I'd wait about a three count and then jerk , jerk jerk, jerk, then pause..I've read so many pros let it set idle in colder water for a long time.. Ya ever tried that long wait? ten seconds on a pause seems like an hour. I also got into the rapala Husky Jerk buying spree and thought I'd used them, but they tumble dif than a rogue, and I've always gone back to the rogue. I got the x raps when they came out and they work, its a lot less resistance on the retrieve than a rogue. Around here the go to color is black and silver with orange belly. On ky lake its blue/silver and green..also the clown works well and sometimes the ol black an silver. Pointers are used more these days at ky. lake from what I've read over the years.. |
